Oh yeah, if it was cheap enough to make it feasible to replace the motor with a Ford 351W or 302, I'd do it in a heartbeat- as long as the rest of the build was up to snuff.

It's a cheap roller. Take the engine out and put it on craigs list and replace it with a Ford.

You really need to understand the source of the stress that's cracking the glass. Understand that first. If it's the frame run, don't walk, away. Mine was getting a little bit of stress by the side pipe ports. Nothing a little motor mount adjustment didn't take care of. You really need rigid mounts as the flexing that happens under the torquey acceleration can cause the engine to lift especially on the drivers side. I believe that SPF even has a motor mount adjustment tip published. (Drill a hole and bolt it.)

Lost of guys in Aus put chevys in Cobras...
Mostly LS series engines & due to emission regularions.
You'll find that they are just as proud of thier rides as any others and rightly so.

99% of people wouldn't have a clue...

A well built Lonestar with NO motor would easily be worth more than that.

I'm surprised to hear of the "cracks". The bodies are quite strong. I would suspect it experienced an "event", or has a (correctable) major error in body mounting.
Where are the cracks?

I'd prefer an ls7 in a Kirkham.
There's just something right about a modern day 427, in a modern made Kirkham cobra.
Must be the magic number I suppose... :-)

It's a friggin car, that's why there's an option list, and people still put their personal touches on it after they get it. I've found that 99% of the people that look at the engine don't have a clue as to what they're looking at. I had one guy, worked at Ford engine plant for 35 years, tell me " I never seen anything like that come down the line." I told him it was a prototype, they turned the block 180 degrees, so they could use Chevy parts because they were cheaper and made more power. He absolutely believe me until I told him differently. You can tell people anything, and they will believe it. If you don't believe me, the next time someone asks you something about your car, make up something outrageous and see if they don't.

We have driven many different CObras out on road tests after carb/distributer curve mods and as we went thru the industrial area, city park, library, residential area and the grade school at the edge of town---we have passed a 90+ year woman out for a walk that waved with big smile, other walkers/joggers, and to cap it off---at the school yard--there was a little girl about 7 or 8 off by herself( not participating with the others) my son gave her a little wave which she smiled a big Smile and big wave----not only that, but all the kids on the field were watching us and everyone waved back---not one of them was worried about what engine was in the car!!!!

GM powered Cobras are a small percent of the total population. However they seem to be, in many cases, faster than the very large percent that are Ford powered. Cases in point: Hotfingers and the guy with the buick V6. Here in AZ, two of the quickest/fastest three Cobras are chevy BBC powered. Guess how I know.

Get a car you like and drive it around those who would judge you.

That's a wide sweeping generalization. Argue that Chevy's are cheaper, but faster? I think every engine is different and budgets make the difference.

Oddly enough, no. But I'm much more worried about the cracks, and their origin.
For me (cobra daydreamer) I would prefer the Ford motor over the chevy 350. But that being said, I would much prefer the LS7 motor over the ford. Why? Weight, power, $$$. (although a crate LS7 is gonna set you back about 20k by the time you get it running)
As a previous poster pointed out, I think it's something about the magic number... 427. But also the other magic number. (505hp) In stock configuration my 08 Z06 will lay down somewhere between 460 and 485 at the back wheels. I say somewhere between, because I've not had mine on the dyno, but attended a dyno day at Corvettes of Dallas where 13 cars did exactly that during the day. (in stock configuration) At the same time, my car does register consistant mid-high 20's in the mpg category, when I can keep my foot out of it. And that car is roughly a thousand pounds heavier than the cobra.
All that being said... no way in hell would I put a Chevy motor in my F350.

The only reason I would change my BBC is to get more cubic inches with more HP and Torque. With all the busted cylinder walls in the FE's because of the gasket issues I don't think I would sink that kind of money into one. I have caught some crap about the Chevy motor but my auto response is " I had to put something in it to make it go fast". I am a Chevy guy but even the Vettes aren't as Bad A$$ as the Cobra regardless of the engine. There are some rice burners faster than my Cobra but they don't look a fraction as good. Let's face it. These Cobra's are like a fine women. If she is beautiful/fine we typically don't give a crap how smart she is. Regardless of motor choice the Cobra is awesome to own. A lot of times i get tired of waving back to all the thumbs up and waves i get but i don't want to seem like one of those a$$holes that think they are something special because they own a COBRA. Who's having more fun - The guy with the $25,000 motor or the guy with the $5000 motor? Buy it - Fix it up - Drive the sh*t out of it!!!!
