I think the T/A's came along shortly thereafter and were represented to be a performance upgrade over the other 2. The Uniroyal Tiger Paw was introduced in there somewhere, too. Any tire historians out there?

You are absolutly on point with that! In 1972 the TAs WERE an "upgrade" over the bias-belts Polyglas or Wide Ovals. The TAs are close to "period" and buyers at BJ and other drug fests are conditioned to expect them. I just wouldn't DRIVE on them............
In a 15" tire on a Cobra there are limited choices today but I wouldn't put the TA in the running. Yes, Avons are expensive but you get the performance you would expect. The Mickey Thompson SRs and STs are a vastly better tire than the BFG and not much more expensive.
