SunBurst Knock Off Wheels

Thanks Brent for a dedicated Tire & Wheel area,

I am looking into building a new Cobra and a street roadster is the target, no hood scoop, roll bar, undercar exhaust,no Stripes, FE engine, no turkey pan etc. etc. I had thought about going with Trigos or FIA style wheels but, saw the Sunbursts on CSX 3357 & CSX 3269 and wondered if there is a source for new Sunburst Knock offs.

Looks like this.......

I believe the answer is NO.... Until someone makes the molds and sends them to China for an unacceptable copy and charge a boat load of green.

Wasn't someone here looking in to having M & A Castings make copies?
If so, I hope they fit Trigo five-pin adapters. (hint, hint!)

I might be able to buy a set made in China.

Tony,

There's a guy making Sunburst reproductions in magnesium and he's also got an original aluminum set for sale too. Here's a recent thread on the subject.

I've talked with a couple Wheel Mfgs (of Cobra Specific Wheels) about Sunburst. One said he made them at one point but neither seemed to interested in making them now. I think they are an awesome wheel in the right build.

Mike sells them here on CC http://www.clubcobra.com/classifieds...uct=1777&cat=4

Maybe if M & A had enough pre-construction orders they might consider doing a production run. If the price were inline with fia or s/c wheels, I'd certainly plunk down some hard earned dollero for a future project.

Hello All,

Who is Mike and does he still make the new Aluminum version of these wheels, they were advertised at $5k for five of them but the information of for offsets, widths etc. etc. were not available.

I went to the website and the links to the Tri Y exhaust were broken and wheels did not show up with the search function....are they still in business?

I took out one bad link, but all the others work. He's still in business as far as I know. There's a link to his old eBay auction, which still works too.

Has anyone talked to Vintage Wheel to see if maybe he can be persuaded to knock out some Sunbursts and add them to his catalog?

I've got a set of original sunburst wheels I've been trying to fit on my Kirkham Street Car. They are quite different than the Trigos. I'm trying various shimming but so far no matter what I do they rub on the calipers and/or the steering linkage.

If you look a various CSX 3xxx cars there seems to have been different offsets to the sunbursts.
When I was at the Boulder museum they had a street car with rear Sunbursts that completely filled the rear wells very much like the Halibrands, but in looking at various pics and the green Canapa car, for example, the rears are the same as the fronts and end up looking a little "puny" in the rear wheel wells. Maybe one reason that a lot of people swapped them out back in the day.

If someone can make some repros with the same offsets and clearances as the Trigos I'm in.

Maybe the Kirkhams can warm up the CNC machine and whack out a couple sets.

IMO the recent postings at various places gave the appearance of attempting to create an artificial price point prior to bringing a product to market. Sort of a different way of asking you what you think somthing is "Worth"????

A couple of months ago some OEM magnesium FIA wheels were being offered for $8000....that seemed a little over the top............

I have connections in the wheel bizz( major player) Are the design of these wheels copywrited? Who would actually buy a set(price? guessing $2K, set of 4, based on a run of 400)

A run of 400? We've been trying to get M&A Castings to do a run of 15-20 sets of the magnesium Cobra S/C wheels, but don't seem to have enough interest. I would think with a smaller demand for street 427's than S/C Cobras would make the Sunbursts less of possibility for reproduction than the S/C wheels.

Make them & people will come! I bet if a few Cobra MFG's had access to them with the Correct spacing & a good price they would eventually get them out of your hands. Not that I have any money to invest...Wish I did.

mr bruce 09-13-2009 03:29 PM

The company I know is big time,DOT certified and all, they might not even do 400, that's only 100 sets. the problem with a deal like this is everybody wants a different backspace, 5 pin, 6 pin, width, then bolt on. Build them and the customers will come? Ha, not in this economy. lets see a show of hands, with a checkbook and pen ready to send a deposit.

Of, course they aren't going to sell this week but these wheels have been a discussion for many years around here & there are many cars original, replica & future builds that they would suit well. Back spacing is the issue that would obviously come into play.
