I got news for you, all the splines in the world wouldn't have saved that stubby. You might think about replacing the one on the other side, too. Seriously, if it were me, I'd pull the good one out and send it, along with the broken one, to D-Cel and have him tell me why the broken one sheared and have him test the good one for it's strength. There's a bunch of CSX owners out there that would thank you for that information.

I plan on replacing both with upgraded parts. I have a call in to Michigan Driveline and also came across Summers Brothers ( Summers Brothers - Manufacturer Of High Performance Axles For All Of Your Racing Needs!), which seem decent too (any of you CA folks know them?). EDIT: I thought the Summers Brothers 35 spline axle with a 5 yr warranty against breakage from drag racing was interesting. Interesting suggestion with having D-Cel test the one that broke. I might just do that.
Just as an FYI - if I had broken a half-shaft instead, can these be replaced by disconnecting them at the joints and not removing the hub? Not that I'm planning on doing that or anything.

Didn't they have a variety show back in the 60's? You know, Tom & Dick were their names....

Yes. Uhhh, at least on an ERA you can.

Strange-I wrote that very thought to you in a PM-5 hours ago. Hmmmmm.
The Summers Bros held the world land speed record (409 MPH) for piston-engined streamliners in the '60's with 4 blown Pontiac engines. The rear end held up.
Mark Williams=good too.

Yes, it was a stroke of brilliance. And while D-Cel can be just a tad bit "touchy," I would hire his expertise for this job in a heartbeat.

I didn't know about Doug's misfortune until tonight and I was literally holding my breath while I was reading through the thread. I'm relieved Doug's problem was the axle and not the rear end.

Don't be too relieved. Just getting it out is a serious PITA. And from the last CSX that Kirkham saw, little metal shavings spread throughout the diff and it all needs to be cleaned up, plus the two new axles. But at least they will fix it right.
