David - As soon as you have photos of the complete aluminium toploader could you post them on Clubcobra. The added bonus for people this side of the pond is that shipping will be cheaper than for the cast iron lumps.

Hello David,
I'm sure this isn't the first time someone has mentioned this to you.
I'd guess there would be a bunch of Cobra owners with Tremec transmissions that would beat a path to your order desk if you offered a close ratio gearset for these boxes. About a 2.75 - 2.85 first, and a .75 - .82 fifth. Just imagine, people could use all five gears!

Aluminum toploader? If the price was the same, yeah! For me the weight would be the only consideration but a polished unit sure would look nice on a show car! I'd rather stick with the cast housing for originality. Ask me again tomorow

Alloy Toploader
An added bonus to my way of thinking, is that an aluminium cased Toploader is very period and would be totally acceptable for vintage racing, some people are now using Jericos. The PDL Mustang is a very famous (in this neck of the woods) old 1977 circa racing sports sedan, they have taken out the Toploader and fitted a Jerico. I dont think the lap times have changed though but its easier to change gear!

Here is a picture of the first finished tailhousing in aluminum. Weight is 8 pounds.
We are also finished with our aluminum linkage with heim joints.

I have not decided if we are going to pursue any of the 27" tailhousings. The case we are making in iron and aluminum have the inner bolt pattern to be used in a narrow bolt pattern application.

The aluminum tailhousing should be around $280. They will be 28 or 31 spline.

Here is our first new aluminum maincase. Weight is 12#, the cast iron ones are 27#

David - what is the torque rating on the aluminium boxes and about what is the weight difference?
Has someone asked how much they are going to be yet? If not, how much are they going to be?

The aluminum case should not affect the strength of the unit that much. I would not use one for heavy duty drag racing but for street and vintage road racing it should be fine. It looks like 60 days minimum before they will be ready. Price should be around $2000 for a completely new large spline aluminum unit.

We have assembled the first large spline aluminum unit and the total weight is 74#. A small spline unit should be slightly less.
