Default Illinois registration process

OK, the car is still about 4 weeks away from completion. But I want to get a handle on what the titling process is. Here's what I think I know or don't know.

1) Need to have the car inspected.
The dmv.org site has this guy as the inspector for the northern half of the state (Bob Jackson) but I was give Frank Koeder as the guy to see.

2) After the car passes inspection, what besides the NHRA guys blessing and the CMOS do I need to bring to the DMV office?

3) How are taxes calculated for the car?

Any suggestions/recommendations and/or wisecracks are more than welcome.

Thanks,
Ed

Receipts for kit, & technically any other items included in build that you haven't paid sales tax on somewhere. If you've had the kit for a while without paying the state tax, they will sometime in the future bill you for late payment & interest. I do believe that they want insurance info as well.

I had my car registered at a currency exchange as a 65 Factory Five Roadster. I had my certificate of orgin from Factory Five and reciepts from the build and paid the state sales tax. Depending on how long you took to build the car from the date of original shipment determines what you have to pay. mdmull will tell you I did not have my car inspected. I am his better half and he built a car for me.

We are in Kane County, does the county matter? Don't know.

When I did mine, I had Bob Jackson do the inspection and it was relatively painless, other than setting it up. These are car guys, so they are more interested in talking shop and cars and getting you on the road (safely).

I put together all of my receipts based upon what I paid taxes on already and what I did not pay taxes on. I did a spreadsheet breaking the two down and brought that to the Secretary of State with me. I had everything organized, and they were happy with that. They geve me temporary plates because they had to ensure that everything came back okay. I had a title and permanent plates shortly thereafter.

Thanks everybody for the feedback.

But you do need it to be inspected, before you can apply for plates and pay any taxes?

I live in Springfield and know the Secreatry of State employee that does our area for cars and bikes. They know the brands and look for safety issues, breaks ,lights, seat belts. My BDR was already titled but I took it to him to get an opinion and he said , 'Its a BDR it will pass' and just checked brake lights, lights , brakes. They are really tough on motorcycle kits. Seems they are more strict on cars with lots of donor parts.

I believe you have to apply for title before (along with) the application for plates. In order to do the title, you need the inspection complete. The taxes they take any time; for me, it was the first check that cleared... go figure.

Remember to send the original inspection form in to the state - I made a color copy and they didn't like that - it delayed everything by a month or so as we went back and forth through the mail...

I did the spreadsheet thing too and had no questions.

Yes I did.

I guess I'm more concerned about what proof of payments/taxes paid I need. I have kept a file and a spreadsheet on pretty much everything purchased to date. Just trying to make sure I don't get blindsided by something.

Thanks,

A big question is whether they will tax you on the value of the work you had done out of state----example---transmission and engine x dollars and tax paid---value of engine and trans in car x + y. no tax paid on y----

It is looked at differently if the owner does the work as to having it professionally done---especially out of state or country ( as in BDR or SPF )

The engine and trans was built in state. 98% of everything else was ordered online from places like Summit and JEGS. The only things purchased out of state that I picked up was, the phase 1 chassis and the phase 2 body kit from Classic Roadsters II in MN along with a rear end they built for me.
