Question Anyone running Dual 4bbls on their 460?

I am buying a Superformance next year and have been wrestling with the 351w-Stroker vs 460 debate. I think I've come full circle back to the 460 for two reasons.
One: The Sound!
Two: the fact that I love the Dual 4bbl look. I have seen duals on a 351 but they use a 289 intake with an adapter plate. The narrower spacing of the Carbs and smaller air cleaners don't look right to me (IMHO).

Here come the barage of questions:

Anyone out there running Dual 4bbls on a 460? Is it tough to keep them in tune? What size Carbs, I am assuming that they would be in the 390 - 500 cfm range. Is low end torque and therefore drivablity affected with this setup? Which intake should I use to avoid hood clearance problems? Anyone have any pictures to share? Lastly (I told you I had a lot of questions. ) Anyone with a spf/460 setup coming to VIR who would be willing to give me a quick ride???

Thanks,

John

Default dual 4bbl 460's

Yes, The intake is dual plane (forgot who makes it), the carbs are Holley 600 squarebore vac secondaries, the linkage is ford-repro (forgot what year and model), with a bellcrank and the carbs mounted backwards. I recommend downleg boosters in the carbs to improve throttle response, and a little progressive in the linkage so one comes on a tiny bit earlier than the other. You can get all the part numbers from house of cobras (their 460's usually have dual quads), or just buy the whole damn setup complete. The intake has small ports compared to the cobra jet heads though.

Blue Thunder makes the dual quad intake. They took the 428 dual intake and recast the outer flanges to the 429 size. They also left enough room for porting to get them out to the CJ size. Since it was originally based on the 428 intake, the oe Ford linkages and air cleaners will work just fine. This intake had a strong reputation, and Blue Thunder definitely has their act together so I would trust their work in a heartbeat. I don't know if it is still in production, but a quick Google on Blue Thunder will get you to their site, which is not state of the art, but at least has their phone number!

Default Thanks!- and a foolish question...

Thanks for all the reponses! Blue Thunder's website is www.bluethunderauto.com for anyone else interested.
A few more questions: Do you have to run 600's? Making a comment about gas mileage in this thread seems absurd but it seems that 1200 CFM on a relatively "Stock" 460 would be a bit over carbed considering that many people run a single 850 on their 460. (If I can keep from sending extra fuel out the pipes and therefore $ out of my wallet I'd like to...) Can you run twin 450's Holleys instead? Do they have the same physical outside dimensions as the 600's or are they a completely different style of Carb that would not fit on the manifold? How much work and cost is involved in porting the intake to match the Cobra jet heads that come on the 460/535 crate motor? Lastly anyone who hasn't taken a look at the Picture of the twin 4bbl set up SFfiredog posted in another thread on this forum needs to do so! Absolutely beautiful! Here's a link to the photo...

Thanks again,

Thumbs up

John,
i have the Blue Thunder dual quad intake with 2 600 cfm edelbrock performer carbs...simply the best setup I've ever had on any car.The intake is a dual plane. That means that the right bank of cylinders only 'sees' the left half of the carbs,so 600 cfm is all it'sees'.Whereas a open plenum manifold 'sees' the whole carb, if you have a 850 holley then each cylinder will see the whole 850 carb. The throttle response is outragous, 1/4 throttle and your gone,no bog. FFP [ford power parts in L.A. can get the intake for you.]The edelbrock carbs have a better low/mid range transition than holleys also.
Good Luck.
Perry.
