So, I still don't understand...
Which is better: a small block or a big block?

BBC rules!!!
Sorry, but I just couldn't help it. I figured I could distract you Brand-X guys from your internal bickering and give y'all a common enemy...

Lowell, you're a real a-hole. Man, when I saw your name attached to this thread when I signed back in, I just let out a big sigh. Well, it was a burp, but I disguised it as a sigh.
Everyone knows that a medium block is king.
Hey, I don't know if I ever asked... did Eric @ PE do your 418? Just curious.

I will say a BBC is better than a SBC.
I watch FOX.

Hey J.P. in your 1st paragraph you hit it right on the head!
And I took my Zoloft so I'm doing better also
As far as Byron, I know he wasn't breaking balls, he tunes most of the FI fords here in No. Ca, so he has seen just about every combo out there, that's all.
Lowell, it depends on how big your bus is?
If your a short bus type use a small block, otherwise use a real bus motor a 385!
Ok I'm done.

I figured out how to settle the BB v. SB thing...I put a 5hp Briggs & Stratton blower motor in my EM. I sawed a big hole in the hood so I could get the pull string easily (none of that non-purist electric start stuff for me). She handles like a dream on the track (although she fish tails like a mother if yer not careful!). The torque isn't great but you should see the looks I get at shows...everyone runs over when I start it and that stroked 5hp comes to life through the side pipes (I'd quote ci but I forgot the number..I'm now actually getting 7 hp (29% increase!) which for all you naysayers I dyno'd at the flywheel of course...I wouldn't want that chasis dyno variation that we all argue about) Guys, you just have to try it. With this set-up I feel I can take all comers on the front lawn (or backyard)..your choice.

So, What did the school busses use for engines, BEFORE the 385 series engine came out? I would bet your last dollar that those school busses used an FE engine. Why do I bring this up? I dont know. Bored, I guess! Now, my NAF has a "me-too" 351W, and the Cobra is painted blue with white stripes, so there!

Now I have to decide after checking the bank and finding out I am going to need another 1 million dollars to make the 514 run on pump gas.

Performance engineering out of Ohio builds some "custom" 460 stroker engines (for around the 514 c.i. price...) that will run just fine with premium fuel. They will run even better with 100+ octane fuel, however will run just fine with the premium fuel. These engines also have several other advantages over the crate engines.

I'll repeat again
My 514 runs BETTER on regular gas. It has very mild compression and does NOT need premium.. in fact it does NOT like premium. The power comes from big "lungs" and the cam.

Filled my tank on the way home last night for $25.00 at $2.19/gal. My 499 HP Performance Engineering 418 gave me an average of 14.6 MPG for about 50 miles of Interstate driving, five or six trips down the dragstrip and the rest two lane back roads with a few miles of in-town driving thrown in.
