RaceDeck Flooring is Ordered

Hopefully I will have it by the following weekend (9/25) and can get it installed then.

Dealing with Janene was a pleasure, even if she did laugh at my e-mail address.

And in no way is this post meant to be debate between different flooring products. I did my research, and purchased what I felt was best for me.

I think you made a good choice. I went the U-Coat It route when we built the house 4 years ago. It's already in need of a redu or cover-up. RaceDeck is one of the options I was considering.

Actually I'm doing a garage overhaul this year.

Earlier in the year I finished the sheet rock and got it painted. Just installed a new insulated door with windows and a new opener. The opener is mounted off to the side (see link below) so it gives me more head room for when I order my 2 post lift. It's already heated so I should have a great place to play with the car during the winter.

John, not sure if you've thought through how to lay the floor but I'll share how I did mine. If you have the finish trim for the edge of the floor you need to position that at the edge of the floor at the garage entry - where you want it. For the tiles, if you are standing outside the garage looking in, start at the front left edge with the loops of the tiles going forward into the garage and to the right into the garage. Don't put the floor all the way to the left wall - give it a little space to "grow", if necessary. With strong sun the floor can buckle a little as it expands if it is too tight against walls. I've found that mine did it just a little, then settled itself out. Wasn't a big deal at all. As you reach the back wall you will need to trim pieces, as necessary. Or, if they are out of site under cabinets then no biggie. Same thing for the wall to the right as you are looking into the garage. My tiles are black, red, and white. The perimeter is black so there was some gap on the floor and I took a few mintues to paint the floor black so it blends in. (I previously put down a light coat of cheap epoxy.) Right or wrong, that's the way I did it and it came out great. Oh, a jigsaw cuts through the tiles like butter.

Go to their website and design the floor. It's so easy even an old silverback like myself could do it. Submit it for bid, and be sure to tell them you are a CC member. They will give you a nice discount.

I re-did my garage a few years ago. Nice and spacious and clean. Cabinets and no clutter. Benches all trimmed in diamond plate. For the floor I used the big vinal floor mats that are specifically made for garages. They cover the entire floor. Looks very nice overall, but the mats have a tendency to buckle. At some point I want to go with the RaceDeck. Gotta wait for the right time though.

Got it installed yesterday, and I love it. My wife even likes it.

Here are a couple pictures of the before with the boxes of the flooring ready to go.






Didn't take to many pictures during the install, except to provide a hint that at least worked for me.

If you look at the next series of four pictures, you will notice that when fitting a piece into a corner, I set the corner first, then worked my way out to the edges. I found that if I started at the edge, it was extremely difficult to fit the corner, as it was kind of wedged in.









For the transition pieces in the first two pictures above, I used a rubber dead blow hammer to set them in place. I also used the dead blow hammer for the pieces I had to cut to fit around the edges. For all the other, like in the second two pictures above, I just stepped on them with my foot. Once again, I worked the corner first.


And here it is, all complete. Yes, I know, it's still a mess, but it's also a working garage.



Finished with the car in place.



Now for some the things I learned that made it easier for me.

For cutting the tiles, I used a jig saw. I tried my chop saw, but it left more of burred rough edge. For cleaning up the burr, I used a medium rasp file. Go over it a couple times and it was cleaned up.

For marking the tiles for cutting, I used a silver Sharpie pen as this showed up well on the black tiles. After cutting and filing, I sprayed the edge with 3M adhesive remover and wiped it off with a rough terry cloth rag. Left me with a clean tile that way.

I ordered 5 extra tiles of each color. That way if I screwed up cutting one, I would not be dead in the water. As it was, I only screwed up one black tile, so now I have some extras in case I damage one in the future.

Needless to say, I'm very pleased with the RaceDeck product, and the outcome.

Only negative thing I have to say is that it's to easy to do. I only had to time to consume 8 beers. I was figuring it would be at least a short case job.

I found cutting the tiles with a table saw also worked and I could just rub off any plastic particles with my hand for a nice edge. Anyway, one other option for others to consider.

Nice looking floor & garage, well equipped.
A question though, would it help at all to overlap the edge strip 1/2 way on the adjoining tiles to help tie them together?
