if your starter is getting a little tired, it will draw more amps than normal and cause your solenoid to switch (the clicking you hear) but not enough current to engage your starter. A light power cable from the trunk will also cause a significant voltage drop, enough to give you problems with an older starter. If you can start it with jumper cables direct to the solenoid and grounded to the motor then your main power cable (from the trunk to the solenoid) is on the light side and should be replaceds with a larger one. I went with a 0 welding cable, and the engine now cranks twice as fast as the size 2 cable I had.... but an older starter will crank a lot slower than a new one.
