Ill second Ralphy that the best part of the coast heading south from SF is between Carmel and San Luis Obispo. If you do that try to take the time to stop at Hearst Castle. Takes a couple of hours but well worth it.
If you're going to stop in Carmel give yourself at least half a day to window shop the downtown. A full day if you want to wander the side streets and look at the houses and cottages. The town is only 1 square mile but looking at everything can take some time.
Could go on and on about Carmel and Highway 1 South.
