Looks really good. Are you going to paint it off the frame or after it's been mounted and bonded down?

Metal-morphous 05-14-2014 07:18 PM

We are going to paint it first then mount and bond it to the frame as per ERAs instructions.
It's a little tricky but we came up with a method that will insure an easy installation , I'll post lots of photos

Fantastic build. Can't wait to see the final result.

So, any thoughts yet if you are making the seat knobs and rods available. PM me if you are and cost.

Cheers
Greg

Awesome work - great looking build here.

Metal-morphous 05-28-2014 07:21 AM

Now that the bodywork has had ample time to out gas we sanded down the polyester gel, got it read for urethane primer, applied the primer followed but a guide coat. A few more days of out gassing and it will be ready for the finial sanding before paint.

Last sanding before paint.
As you can see, the glass is straight and smooth.
Little work is needed in this last sanding stage.

While we have been busy getting the body ready Eddie has been busy getting his chassis ready. He's working on the suspension parts and has added some more DNA from his ERA 148, he's painting some of the parts with the same paint from the same gallon that he used on 148 some 30 years ago, and yes Imron will last that long and much longer as long as you don't add the activator hence the name ACTIVATOR :-)

This ERA narrow hip is just about ready for its show paint job but first we are pulling molds from Eddies quarter panels, I figure since we have to do this to another ERA very soon we will be ready with our own fabricated fiberglass panel that's a perfect fit.

We covered Eddies quarters with 2 layers of static cling plastic and lots of tape to protect his body from the fiberglass product that will be use to make the inner shell of our mold.

A thin layer of fiberglass is applied and left to cure overnight.
The mold is worked loose from the body and as planned the static cling released without a mark to Eddies cobra,,,,:-)

We will do the same to the right quarter then apply a high streath foam to the outer shell to make it strong.

Hello !

Long time (since about 2008 ?) lurker here...

Just wanted to say that this is one of the most fantastic threads here ! ! !

Have wanted to build an ERA kit since about 1981, when they came to Dearborn for the Shelby club meet.

A year or two later, I had a chance to drive out to again see Peter and Phil in CT and it was a very memorable trip.

Eddie's new car is the one I have envisaged for all these years. What an incredible build and I am so thankful to Metal-morphous for sharing all this.

That the Sunburst wheels are available and that a narrow-hip body is being done is making this into a car that will truly stand out; what a beauty this is going to be.

I hope that Eddie will also continue to post up in this thread and share some of his thoughts about how he is going to finish the car.

Really interested too about what the color will be.

Again, many thanks for this thread and for this forum. There are a lot of great folks here and Dan EC's thread about his car is one I have been enjoying for a long time.

Kind regards,
Frank

There is no official name for the color, but will be a dark midnight navy blue. I had a little paint (acrylic lacquer) from 30 years ago that I used on first ERA build. I had 5 qts. Of 79 Chrysler night watch blue mixed. It wasn't what I was looking for so an approximate qt of 406 high strength black color was added. Ron took the paint to his jobber for a match. So!! Short story long,no official color, but would be happy to share formula when mixed as 2 stage.

Here's a photo of ERA 148 Eddies first cobra painted by yours truly some 20 years ago and may I add still looks just like the photos :-) It too was painted in the tinted Nightwatch blue. Sometimes it looks blue and other times it looks black, all depends on lighting conditions

Thank you, Eddie and Metal-morphous ! ! !

Amazing color.

There was a dark, navy blue that Mercedes had in 1994 that I think is similar and that I've always thought would look perfect on an ERA ;-)
