Default Door Sill Plates

Did the originals have them? I bought a shrinker/stretcher tool from Woodward with the hopes of fabricating a set. I tried 5052 and 6061 in .040 thickness with the sides at 1.00 inch wide and .50 inch wide. All four attempts resulted in the stretched section breaking.

Does anyone make them to fit the 289 FIA door shape or should I pursue a different solution for the edge?

Thanks
Bill

You need softer, un-heat treated aluminum. 6061 cracks when bent, stretched.

I'm not a Smith by anyone's imagination but I'd say the aluminum would most likely need to be annealed before stretching. Google it and you'll see more about the process.

I bought angled aluminum from either Home Depot or Lowes and made my door sills.
I used a bit of heat on the bend drilled and csink the holes. Looks great.

I recommend 5052 aluminum for forming. 2024 will also work.

No pics available she is undercover sleeping the winter off.
Just check out the aluminum stock at Lowes or Home Depot
The 1 x 1/2 stock is 36" lg
Put a flame to it and it becomes pretty maluable and easy to form the radius at each end

Hi Bill,
The bodies are made from 3000 series ally. Very soft and formable. I wouldn't doubt that the trim plates may have been too.

Good Luck,
Mike.

Comp cars did not have sill plates that I know of.
However on my old car I too used the flat alloy stock from Ace Hardware, same as Lowes, it bends and conforms nicely.
All for about $6, rivets extra.....

85CCX-
I've been bending bending section 36" x 2" into 1" x 1" 90 degree sections, then stretching one side so as to follow the contour of the door and protect the edge. When I try to make the sharp radius in the front, the stretched part cracks. I take a picture and post. If it's just a flat piece, I wouldn't have any problems

Looks like you're using some very thin stuff. Thicker material should give you a little more stretch before it splits.

I successfully made two sills today. Many thanks to everyone that provided excellent feedback and suggestions. I used .040 3003-H14 aluminum, 2" x 36". I made a lip 1/2 wide and proceeded to stretch and shrink to fit a buck I made from the contour of the body. I cut a piece of the carpeting that came with the kit (I won't be using it anyway) to check gap between the lip of the sill and carpeting. Body needs some trimming. Easy stuff

Bill , it looks like your using the grooved jaws that came with your shrinker/stretcher, there is an outfit in the USA somewhere that remove the grooves and apply a 'stippled' finish for use on alloy, does not mark the alloy as much and therefore eliminates the tendency for the alloy to crack on the grooves.... gitzit or something like that...
