Gary,

Should have been clear, that the car was running in 1st thru 5th, (first thought was a trans failure). We have drive to the rear-end and only to the Left wheel.

Mark.

So that's on a hoist isn't it, and yet no drive on the ground?

What diff assembly do you have in this?

Gary

Gary, it has a ZF unit that is the same as the late model IRS Camaro, 0012 (our car) is only a year old this coming June.

So while the left rear was turning on the hoist, was it positive drive, or just rolling along with the tailshaft?

Are both rear axles intact, since everything external to the diff is an easy visual diagnosis?

How much power are you putting through this diff?

Gary

Gary,

Good questions. I have seen a car up on jag stands where a wheel was spinning due to the inertia of the driveshaft spinning, and you could stop the wheel by just touching she sidewalk with your hand.

Jim

Jim and Gary, When up in the air, only the left turns, right is motionless and can freely turned in both direction will the left is turning.

Can you stop the left wheel while the tailshaft is spinning, engine running?

This has to be a broken diff.

Different style rear end, but that is exactly what my Jag rear did when I snapped the stub axle. It broke inside the carrier right where the axle entered the LSD unit. I even drove the car a few miles as the LSD unit was tight enough to allow me to run on just the one side as long as you didn't give it too much gas and eased out the clutch. When I put it on the lift, it did exactly as Moto One is describing.

Why haven't you taken the cover off and just look what's going on? That's what I would do

Nope, that's against the rules. You have to diagnose the problem through purely non-invasive methods. Just like figuring out what's wrong with your valve train but without removing the valve covers. It's way more fun that way and you're less likely to have a spider gear or broken tip of a stub axle fall out on your toe.

We have never had an issue with one of the ZF diffs and have people with MKIII (427 type) chassis putting 700HP and more through them. Very possibly a defective unit as the FIA Moto One is working on likely much less HP and torque.

Mark IV, I'll have you know we have plenty of power, Ok maybe it's only adequate. We are in the 450/400 range 363 Ford Racing, with 8 stack injection. Plenty enough. :-)

Mark.

Well finally got the 0012 back up home, and what I found was the Right axel inner CV failed. We are now trying to ether get a new axel from Superformance or have two new HD axels made up.

Mark.

This should have been fairly obvious on a hoist.

Inner CV boot would have been twisted up.

CV joints don't fail, it will be a broken axle straight after the spline.

This is what happens when you just sit there and just speculate what it is without even looking. I mean just physically looking instead of just relying on a board for their input. I guess I do things efficiently sorry.

Sorry Gary, but the axel is fine, the balls, and cage failed big time. I wish I could post the photo showing that the axel is still C-clipped to the center of the CV. CVs do fail.

Mark.

Let's have a look at a photo.

The cage is not a driven member, only the inner and outer.

I've replied to your PM Mark.

If you can't post a pic of yours, go here: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/vi....php?p=6585929 and tell us if it looks like that guy's cv or how it's different.
