Oberg screen type oil filters & Race sumps
Been trying to source Oberg filters online, can't seem to find much on them!
Have just purchased a Holley Oberg fuel filter 28 microns, and see they make same small style unit to filter with different screen at 60microns for Oil systems and these can go before maybe a normal style filter cartridge as a diagnostic device! Maybe some people just use one of these instead of a cartridge style?
I have had a dual screen Oberg oil filter on my last Cobra, Bevan Wrights car.
The next thing is wet sump, having used Milodon 7Qt baffled road race sump with ears etc, any good tips on sumps that work well for a 351W based engine?? - dont want to go dry sump.

Obergs seem to be a fairly good filter,, most cannister style filters have a bypass and won't filter all the oil all of the time.. to where as the Obergs do. Some filters will capture particles down to a smaller size, but if they screen only 60-70% of the oil, you run the risks.. The more popular styles of Obergs are the Tattle Tale and the 600 series. Another brand of screen filters is called something similar to "System One."
I've heard they are comparable to each other..
Most guys running the Obergs have the high pressure warning sensor on the Oberg, which tells you when the screen is getting clogged with debris...
The best combo in my opinion would be to run a remote setup, first hitting the Oberg then going into a cannister...
I had a hard time finding the Oberg website, (the filter, not the crusher portion) a couple years ago, and when I just tried, I couldn't locate it...

I understand Gessford recommends Moroso Race oil filters as the best money can buy and the best engine protection. They DON'T filter below 20 microns and that keeps the pressures down at the filter and less by-pass and more actual filtered oil.
Test show that contaminants below 20 microns do not damage engine components.

Ant Moroso Sells Omni oil filters like Olberg 3/4 in and 3/4 outlets on the housings Part# 22285, filter 97710. I am thinking of going the same way because I don't have the room in the frontend to put a larger spin on type that hold 2 quarts. Avival and canton are your 2 most common oilpans for road racing. I would also add the 3 quart accump oiler too. On long sweeping turns your motor may go dry, I am sure that this has saved alot of race motors from no oil pressure. Also set it up to work as a pre oiler and never have to start a dry motor. 80% of engine wear is on start ups. Hope this helps. Rick Lake

Oberg filters
Thanks Rick,
Will check that out. Accusumps I have never seen that used out here, I suppose most race cars are dry sump, but it sounds like a good idea. If the oil pressure drops I guess the accusump gives it a quick injection of oil?
I would prefer to fit a Aviaid Cobra wet sump (8.5qts) it would be interesting to know how these wet sumps perform on a slick tired car, running through twisting turns and the odd big high speed turn!

Ant At R&G I pull about .8g on the 270 degrees turn in the in field. I have the canton t-pan on my car and have a higher pressure in the accump. You can see it stablize at the end of the turn, it is off camber and cuts in at the end to change line. I know 10 psi is the old standard for every 1000rpm, I don't think that they where talking about the FE when that is going on. I have 100 psi spring in the pump and when hot it idles at 750 rpm with 45-50 psi. I want more than less when it comes to pressure and volume. I have heard that this kind of pressure wears out bearing, well someone is going to show me a set first before I change my opinion. I know that it is tough on the cam gear and distrbutor drive but I can check either in 2 minutes by pull the Distributor. The new motor will be a dry sump, 3 stage. Talk to the builder that sell motors and ask for their opinions. Rick Lake

Ant,
I picked up a nice used Oberg filter on eBay for $45.00. I use it to filter the fuel before it gets to the electric pump. These things never wear out and work great. You can get different size filter screens for different fluids, too.

Oberg filters
I bought a Holley brand Oberg fuel filter, which is the same as an oil filter but has a 28 micron filter, this is going inline before carb, I have a 60 micron inline filter before the fuel pump!
Also when I visit LA in about mid July, and pick up my Aviaid or Armando road race Cobra sump, I might get another filter to have in the oil system, but do I need a normal style full flow cartridge style filter as well as the Oberg?
I have no room for a filter in the normal windsor position!
