Revisit the "Paint it- Gold or Blue?" Poll
Last month, CSX4027 asked an opinion question..
CSX 3047 was delivered and born Hertz Gold.
It is currently Guardsman Blue with White Stripes.
If you were going to restore it. Would you go back to the way it was born?
Steve put up a poll for voting on some potential answers. As of today, the Poll Results are:
Overwhelmingly, the majority wanted to see the car back in it's original color.
Well, Steve and I have discussed this car at length well before the poll...
...the trouble that I had was... in my "mind's eye", I could not visualize a 427 Cobra painted all Hertz Gold.
... couldn't make it happen...it kept morphing into a bronze 442. :-)
I needed a good original picture to help make the decision.
Well...we got it right here! ...a very nice vintage photograph of CSX3047, just a mere pup... in it's original Gold paint.
So, I'd like to resurrect the poll, based on these "new" visuals....
...should I start a new poll, so some can change their vote?
Here is the original thread and the Voting Poll....
Take a look at these two pics... CSX3047 in the current blue...and in yesterday's gold.
Which would you prefer?

Thanks for posting the photo's.
I had the opportunity of driving 3047 from Delaware to New Jersey. It was quite an experience and certainly one I will never forget.
I have had the opportunity to drive a more than few original 427's and 289's over the years but never for the distance travelled in 3047.
Afterwards, I felt like I needed a cigarrette.
Fortunatley, I gave up smoking eons ago.  |

Wow.... now ya'll know I have a guardsman blue/white stripe and white pipes..... so that SHOULD be my choice...

If it is to restore an original, go with the original color. ( I kinda like the gold anyway)

Well, Guardsman blue is an awesome looking colour, but I am an originalist (is that even a word??), so I'd say paint it gold!!! Ha, I say I am an originalist, but I am having 2 rollbars on my cobra and painting it orange!!!

I agree 100%.
I remember an AC ACE that was a bronzey-gold, and thought at the time how nice a Cobra would look just a bit lighter.... and that`s it!
Not knocking the blue 'n'stripes, but sometimes, you have to get out of uniform!!!!

The world has about 5000 too many blue/white Cobra replicas, so why take a car with this history and join that crowd? BTW, the picture of Carter and the Cobra conjures up memories of my misspent youth. That shot was taken at Mandalay Farm in Milbrook, NY where Carter was renting a house from the Dysons, currently of ALMS racing fame.

If you are "restoring" it to "original" the question answers itself. If the car began life as Hertz gold and your bringing it back to the way it left SAI then it must be Hertz gold. That color as odd as it may be also helps antiquate the car to that era in a way.
Moreover, very few if any of the orignal 427s to my knowledge left the factory with stripes. Most were solid colors. Is this right Ron?
Hertz Gold is the right answer.

I believe most of the 427 Comp cars had stripes...and most of those were white stripes...
...whereas few, if any, of the S/Cs left SA with stripes...
A quick registry check would confim that... |

Considering this car still wears it's original gold paint under the current blue paint job, it's a no brainer. I know the people involved with this car have come across several methods to strip the current paint off and leave the original gold on the car. Even with some minor paint damage/wear/imperfections of the original gold paint, the car's value is no doubt worth MUCH more wearing it's original paint job. Very few Cobras still wear the factory paint after all these years, and considering this car is one of only 2 cars with this gold factory paint, I say "go for the gold!" .

Yes. I was referring to S/C's. Although most of the pics I've seen of comp 427s in action were without stripes. Interesting.

I've always felt on a car as valuable as this, if the original color is documented as it is in this case, and it's to be restored it should be the original color.
I'm always amazed at how different various originals looked. The rear fender flairs on 3047 don't look at all like today's CSX, Kirkham, or ERA cars from the angle of the picture above in it's blue incarnation.

Clay... you bring out a very interesting point...a detailer's delight... 
You are right.... dead right. The reason that the flares on CSX, Kirkham, or ERA don't look like that is that they were ALL take-offs from a 427 street car. The only replica that I know of, that was taken off an S/C, was the Contemporary.
The original Comps had almost no flare...part of the conversion to an S/C had an exaggerated lip pounded out on the rear wings.
Major body work on many of the original S/C's have muted this original flare.
I concede that the gold paint above tends to accentuate the body curves and edges, but the flare is very much pronounced..
Look at this secret picture of ex-Ned's 3042 rear flare, taken by me using a highly accurate measuring instrument ...compare it to any of the S/C replicas |
