Default Chassis color? Gloss Black or Semi-Flat Black?

I'm about to finish my chassis and I'm unsure of the finish? Should it be Semi Flat or Gloss black? I want to do it right and one time! It's beyond powder coating, so that's out. What did original cars come with? For touch up repairs semi flat is A LOT better. But with possible resale, would the Gloss be a better choice? What is you guy's and gal's opinion? I need some help, I'm finally getting a warm day to paint it tomorrow!! Thanks, Matt.

My SPF is gloss black and I really like it, probably easier to clean too.

Thanks Ron, I will probably paint it semi-flat as per original. I think it does look "prettier" with gloss but I'm trying to stay with the "comp" look! Thanks for the replies. Matt

How are you going to paint it? Spray equipment, spray cans, brush on, etc? What kind of paint are you using? I have to do my frame very soon and I'm curious to see what you're planning.

All I can do now is use a spray can because every things off the chassis. If I had been smart and not in a hurry I should have had the painter do the chassis when I had it painted. Although, I would bet he wouldn't have been as detailed as me and I still would have had to touch up! I had used some Industrial Rustolium Gloss and it turned out OK. But I'm going to paint it with black primer and Krylon Semi-Flat #1613. It's what us Mustang guys use for the engine compartments. It is really great and durable. I will see on posting some pic's soon. Thanks, Matt.

I just had some new mounts welded into my car and figured I'd brush on some POR 15 quickly to keep them from rusting. I just brushed it on quickly and went inside for the night. I was astounded when I came out the next morning - it's absolutely mirror smooth, not a brushmark in site. It looks like a pro spray painted it. I may just sand everything down nice and smooth, tack it off and do a real careful brush job with the POR 15 top coat. It really is mirror smooth.

I can also say POR 15 is great stuff! I used it to paint the tube frames for my hood, doors and trunk. It could pass for powder coating. Don't forget, it is not UV stable. If you have something that will be exposed to sunlight, use the recommended top coat.

767Jockey, why did you have new mounts put on the car? I will be cutting the sb mounts off my Hi-Tech chassis and welding on some big block frame mounts. My question is, how do I position the bb mounts in the correct place?

I was fortunate enough to have Mickmate (Nick) agree to come to my home to do the new mounts. My car originally had a 351C in it and I converted it to a FE. The mounts in my car were welded to the round tube frame and had to be cut out, and new mounts fabricated and installed. Nick made mounts that look EXACTLY like the originals. We took a FE block, heads, b'housing and transmission and lowered it between the frame rails, and positioned the engine very carefully to exactly where it needed to be, 1/2" to the right side of the car, aligned to be perfectly straight front to back parallel to the frame rails, the proper height with regard to the original blueprints and double checked against the hood clearance with the intake, carb turkey pan and air cleaner on with the hood closed. The new engine mounts have the engine and transmission assembly exactly at the proper 2.5 degrees tilt down, and all the rest. Then it was all supported with jack stands, blocks and whatever else we needed in exactly that position while Nick measured, fabricated and welded in the mounts around it. We bolted the engine and transmission on the newly weleded in mounts, removed the blocks and presto! - perfect!

It takes hours and hours to get the positioning correct, and only about 1 hour to actually make and weld the mounts. I would highly recommend you contact Mickmate (Nick), as he can certainly fabricate the mounts easily for you and they are exact duplicates of the originals. All you need to do is position the engine properly, trim his mounts to slide in, and have them welded in place. Nick is an outstanding guy, does awesome work and is an absolute pleasure to deal with. Good luck.

It's a very high quality paint that's designed to go over rust and encapsulate it and prevent it from spreading. It's a great product - I was completely taken by surprise at the quality of the finish. It isn't a stretch to say that it looks professionally spray painted. It's not cheap by any means but worth it. My local speed shop (SK Speed in Lindenhurst, NY) carries it - check with your local place, they may have it. If not lots of internet places sell it - just Google it. Good luck.
