To be legal in this state your Title must have SPCN on it and either a CHP assigned VIN or one that they have accepted from another state. It also must state the year that you register it here and 1965 won't make it.

HOLD THE PRESSES!!

ratacruel,

Do not use any "services" to get your car registered in California. If you buy an out of state car, like I did last year, and you want to register it in California, you have to the roll the dice like I did, and stand in line on Jan 2, 2009 and submit your paperwork like the other 499 of us did this year.

California is touchy about their registration process, and the process varies from one DMV and CHP office to the next. Some offices will accept the previously titled car as a 1966 or whatever if it was previously so titled in another state, others will assign the year you made the application. If you bought it this year, you will have a 2008 SPCNS vehicle. You may also luck out and get a clerk that will allow it to continue to be a 1966 Ford or whatever.

You will only need a bill of sale, [i][b]for the actual sales price, [b][i]because the State Attorney General's office is checking thoroughly all SPCNS licensing and fees to insure we all pay the uniform sales or use tax. You also will have to fill out the license application (see attached SEMA link: http://www.semasan.com/main/main.aspx?id=61557).

I first made application to the San Clemente DMV in July last year when I bought the car, aid all of my fees and received three Temp Operating Permits that allowed me to drive it while I was hanging out waiting for Jan 2, 2008 to roll around. 26 of us received our SB 100 numbers that day and then it was simply a matter of getting checked out by the CHP first (sometimes they will accept your manufacturer's VIN, sometimes they will affix a blue metallic strip with a new VIN for you) and then onto your appointment with the State BAR for your smog exemption. The closest one to you is at the Golden West Jr. College in Huntington Beach.

The DMV will generally do the first inspection on your car if it was previously licensed in another state. Lights, brakes, horn, turn signals, etc.

Hope this helps a little. It's a sweating game until you actually get that SB 100 reservation in your hand on the 2nd. But oh so sweet, when those license plates come in the mail. Keep checking around this site for SB 100, that's what I did and had great success from the other members here.

Tom
