514 specs
New to this forum so hello everyone!I just picked up a classic roadster shelby 427.It is a pretty clean little ride but have a few ? for you guys.It has a fuel cell in the trunk and I was wanting to get the tank to put back in it,I was wondering if you guys might know where I should start looking for one? The engine is a 514 stroker motor by SVO(ford motorsports),and was wondering if anyone new were I could get some specs on it.Thanks

I can't tell you about any fuel tanks, but there were several 514s offered by Ford over the years. There is probably a # on it that would pinpoint the year and that would aid in the exact specs used. That's, of course, if it hasn't been altered...many are.

514's are good motors, but there is one issue you need to investigate. The all came with a solid roller cam. These cams do not allow the valve train to live in a street driven car.
The following is straight from their 2009 catalog for the 521 engine which is the same from 2007 and 2008 for the 514 engine.
Mechanical roller camshaft, M-6250-A514 (mechanical roller camshafts
not recommended for street use; contact Techline for more details).
Provides significant horsepower increases above 3500 rpm and good
low-end torque. Valve lift is .640" intake and exhaust. Duration at .050"
is 254 degrees intake and 258 degrees exhaust.
I would check out the cam to see if it's still the original cam, and if so swap it out along with the valve springs.

I have had several 514 FMS with valve train problems, but it always seems to come back to the valve springs. The springs that come on the 514 FMS are lousy and have a short life span driven on the street. Installing a good quality set of valve springs makes this engine much more durable. Upgrading the keepers and retainers right while your there is good insurance also.

Above the starter on the right side is a tag for the motor. Look at that to get the info. Then you can call Ford racing if it was done by them to get the spec sheet. I have the spec sheet for mine that was built in 02. I got 9k miles before replacing the valve springs, then 13.25k before total rebuild. i went back together with bit milder cam, hydraulic flat lifters, different push rods and valve springs. Ford Racing 800 367-3788 or 586 468-1356.
Scott
Also, if it has the bronze dist gear, it doesn't last very long. I put 2 or 3 in for the first 13k miles. I went with a cast gear after the rebuild!!

I do happen to have a gas tank for a Classic Rosdster that is new (no gas ever added to my knowledge) and never installed. I've gone with and aluminium custom tank that I had a gentlemen fabricate very inexpensively and looks great. (Actually I'd recommend him to you and can send a pic of it also.)
I can send you a photo of the tank if you would like. The sending unit has been removed but other than that it's complete with mounting straps.
I'm located in southern New Hampshire for shipping estimates.

Yes please send me a picture of the tank, and how much your asking. Thanks for all the motor info,I will check it out and see what cam is in it.It has a huge carb! Its atleast a 1250 or bigger,I think I am going to tune it down abit for the steet so if any one has any big block intakes they would like to come off let me know.I also need a smaller carb, maybe a 750 double pumper or something.

I originally had a Holley 1000 CFM HP on my 514. After the rebuild, I changed to the BG 850. I works well with the engine. I am running the Blue Thunder intake.

Visually, not really. You could do oil samples, but they find all kinds of stuff.
I believe they make a cast/steel gear you can run with the mechanical roller. I bought one before rebuilding my engine that I had to return since I never had a chance to use it.

Agreed, but it depends on the mileage. I could never get my rollers (well, only one would fail, but that was enough) to last past 2,000 miles and that was setting them every 300 miles or so.
If you drive the car 500 miles a year, you are probably ok. Take out the lifters, rockers, etc. every two years and send in em for an inspection and rebuild.
I have a hydraulic setup now and it doesn't sound as mean. But it doesn't break all the time.
For a manifold, I use a Torker II, good for the street AND you can run a 14' air filter. I have a 1025 RaceDemon RS. Good carb, probably overkill. It has a lot of adjustments, and will pull clean from 1,200 rpms to redline in 4th gear, so its tractable for the street. Runs fine at 1/8 throttle. Idles rich though.

I am going to inspect the valvetrain this weekend,I have a big carb now and it runs great just idkle super rich.I am going to let my dad drive it and I know he will putt it around and not blow it out like I will.So im just worried about fouling plugs and they are not the funnest thing to change if you know what I mean.
