Default 9500 Rpm

Cranky, did you see Ryan's car turn 9500 all day long at the Pocono? Might impressive for a pushrod motor.

I used to love going to that track. My Dad always got pit passes from Purolator (didn't it used to be called the Purolator 500?) and met quite a few NASCAR legends there when I was growing up.

Very impressive Bill especially since it is a flat tappett engine. Got to get me one of those "little" motors for my car.

Cool WOW, Didn't know Sopranoville had millionaires!!!

Cranky,

Unless you got more money than I think you do, you had better put Mrs. Cranky to work or get a promotion to Cappa... Even dem "flat tappets" cost big bucks...

BTW, I heard the "Bristol Tooth Fairy" laid some awesome tixs on you... Any truth to the rumor???

Has Ryan posted the details of the engine build. I assume this is a Winsor based SB. What crank, rods and stroke is he using? Tell us more.

I think if sombody let out the secrets of that engine their life would be short lived.

I can tell you it is a SVO block with Yates heads and the rest of the parts are made from unobtanium.

Anyone know if/where destroker cranks are available for the windsors?

-steve in nj-

Btw, little known fact. The 289/302 block was actually designed and produced at the Cleveland foundry. (So it's sorta not a Windsor....but it is now?)

Any decent crank manufacturer will make whatever you want, it just costs more when it's unpopular. I would start the phone search with the smaller manufacturers, like LA Enterprises.

Cool They would kill me if I told you!!!

CCX33911,

The Crankster is 100% correct on this one!!! Ryan Newman is running a Penske/Jasper motor... Penske & Jasper Engines teamed up to build NASCAR motors about a year ago...

All Winston Cup motors have a max 358 C.I. with 12:1 heads & holley 830 CFM carbs... The "BLUE" camp all use SVO 351 Windsor blocks & most are using Yates heads... Beyond that, even a "Top Secret" security clearance ain't gonna give you much additional info...

In the Craftsman Truck Series, we use an EEI (Ernie Elliott Inc.) motor and our motor tuner, who works for Ernie, and goes to all the races, won't even discuss the internals!!! Not only that but he used to work for Yates & doeesn't even know the internals of Yates...

I know this ain't much to go on but it's the gospel... Try www.jrsgarage.com for used & new racing parts... he has everything including new motors & race cars...

My $.02

I have heard that in some circles of racing, if you want to be competative, you must lease a motor from the builder who's motors are winning all the races. You don't get to buy it, you must lease it with a "I will not take it apart and reverse engineer this motor" contract. Can't discover the proprietary secrets that are the difference between winning and not even qualifying.

A bunch of years back local NJ driver Jimmy Horton was driving a Ford on the Cup circuit with Leased Ernie Elliott engines. He was not allowed to touch the engine. On race day an Elliott motor man did the tuneup and they went racing.

Sorry I did not realize that he was talking about Ryan Newman running a WC motor. I assume he was talking about some nut in a Cobra.

Thanks for clearing it up.

Cool "nut in a Cobra"

Gary,

You are right about a nut in a Cobra trying to turn 9500 (even with a small block)... You would have to be 5150 (cop lingo for crazy) to try something like that...

Actually they (TV network) showed Ryan Newman's tach & speed via telemetry during the cup race at Pocono last Sunday... The main difference was that he (Ryan) was not shifting on the front straight whereas a lot of the others were... The other drivers were using an overdrive tranny to keep from revving the motor to high...

The point being made was that Peneske/Jasper thought their motor was "bulletproff" enuf to turn 9500 in the front straight...

Well, when I first got my detuned (660hp) 358ci motor, I was tuneing with the speed pro lap top in data log mode. I was spinning so fast on slick pavement in second gear that I revved it past its optimal shift point of 7700 or so. I let off and went into third. In reviewing the data log, I hit 9100 rpm. My motor is done at 8000 rpm or so and I have since set the rev limiter at 8200 rpm to be safe. I hit it every once in a while. I also have the stainless steel valves and not titanium like the cup guys run so over 8000 and it could be trouble so it is cammed accordingly. I am probably on borrowed time with this motor as it has been punished regularly. I keep oil in it and my fingers crossed. Scott

Scott,

I was thumbing through some old threads and came across this one. So, is this engine the same one you ran at Road America this year? Or, is this years engine a newer version of the engine you were speeking of in the above thread?

Clois

One of the biggest improvements gained in recent years was the advent of the shaft rockers. It stabilized the valve train signifigantly. Prior to that you were on borrowed time over 8000 RPM in an endurance application with stud mounted rockers. Just too much wasted motion. The valve train is the key.

The rocker shaft itself isn't new, just ask anyone who worked on Mopar or Buick engines 30 years ago. Dick Landy was touting the benifits in the early 70's. Wonder why it took the NASCAR family so long?
