Gary,
Don't get me wrong, I'm a supermod in a COMPLETLY different kind of forum (Halo-mods.com) so I respect your seniority here and absolutely respect your unbiased opinion. I know you lean towards the Cobra but your stats are also pretty acurate. We all know there is no substitute for torque (Ya know, what gets you out of the hole!) God knows the Mustang was the version of the Cobra that Carol Shelby could release to the general public. Small, lightweight but not nearly the HP of the Cobra. Now think about a Cobra thats AWD! THAT would be the ultimate. The Skyline has some SERIOUS #'s behind it but, it's a heavy vehicle. Yeah, lot of goodies included but, the HP and AWD... should be respected, as you have done. Thank you.

This is the cream of the Aussie GTR Skylines. Hardly the average street car anymore, but what incredible horsepower. Work out the HP per cubic inch, and it leaves almost everything else in it's wake....

So what's a stock Cobra ?

Is it powered by an untuned donor Mustang engine with 150,000+ miles, or a freshly dyno tuned 427 stroker?

Many GTRs over here would (and do) make many cobras look pretty silly on a racetrack. If I had the choice all over again, I'd certainly spend my money on a Cobra again. I simply have no interest in owning a highly strung 6 cylinder preformance car.

That's not to say that I don't respect what they are capable of in modified form...

having had a much modified Turbo AWD Eclipse, running about 300 hp, for a decade before i got my SPF, and being part of that crowd at the dragsrips, i have to say the AWD cars are in a different class. In a quarter mile run, much of the ET is due to the launch, and a well driven AWD car can really hurtle forward out of the lights. I have seen AWD DSM cars, street driven, with around 350-400 hp run mid 10's in the quarter mile. But much of that is in the launch. Rev to 7500 rpm, drop the clutch, and chirp and then gone. If you want to beat a fast AWD car, it would be best to challange him from a low speed roll-on, where his AWD launch would be negated. Or, given the fragile nature of their drivetrains subjected to such never intended abuse, just challange the AWD car to a hundred quarter mile runs, and wait until he breaks an axle or transaxle.

Very different cars, probably appealing to very different drivers.

Skyline is a serious car and can be made to be increadible.

No matter what you think of ricers, be careful. I you mess with them long enough you will be handing the pink slip of you Cobra to the owner of one. Glanced through an article not to long ago about a 9 second street driven Civic! 1/4 mile folks, not 1/8.

Just a little reality check.

Sure we are biased. But what car loving group isn't a bit? I believe that any car that can be built to eat our lunch at least deserves a bit of respect. We want the same don't we? If you want it, give it away.

It's all about power-to-weight ratio with aero thrown in at higher speeds. A street-driven all-motor nitrous Civic isn't much more than a wide go-kart with a roof on it . . . and they go like blazes. Neat, but I think I'll keep my Cobra. A Civic just wouldn't fit in at the Fling.

My point was any bike can be a "chopper".
Any car (American, German etc) can be a "ricer".

It's what do do to the vehicle, not who makes it.

Japanese mfrs have a 'Gentelmans Agreement' on these numbers. Car and Driver tested one and they figured at least 350hp. Kind of like the the big block cars of the sixties. A Hemi only had 425hp by the factory specs. Any of the big blocks made more than advertised.

On a side note, rumor has it they will import them as an Infinity model in 2wd only. You can buy them used (or new) through the importer here in CA for a large sum of money, so ther is a market for them. I personally wouldn't pay more than $50k for one. It woud e a great summer car here.

I agree with flipper35, they are heavy and probably par for the course, as far as most modern cars go!

AWD worked well in Aus with Gentleman Jim putting the 600-700hp Skylines to good use and made a lot of people take notice,

4WD or AWD isn't that brilliant for circuit use as there is a weight disadvantage and also soaks power up, a well set up 2WD car with less than some of huge horsepower these turbo rocket ships can still be comparable.

Whats the point in really comparing a 1200hp Skyline that does a 9 second quarter mile to a Cobra with 500hp that does two seconds slower, most of the races I do are with corners involved and generally speaking younger ricers in this country with huge horsepower haven't got the balls, ability or the handling setup to even be a threat in winding road country.

Having said that I reckon if your happy with your type of car thats all that matters!!!!!!!!!

Nov 2002, Grassroots Motorsports did a shoot-out with RWD (BMW 330) FWD (Acura RSX) and a AWD (WRX). It was pretty complete. WET/DRY, track and street etc. It might be on the net somewhere. I'll look around.

Basically the WRX took the honors wet or dry.

I think there was a reason that Audi got booted from the Trans Am a number of years ago - after they totally dominated with less horsepower.....must be because the SCCA didn't like the color...yeah, that's it!

Speedvision once aired a short movie Audi made about their Trans Am exprience.

It was really nice. Lines like "next year the quattro was required to add 100 pounds of ballast".

Wierd. I saw a new Skyline GT350 at the mall last night. I don't know what model the 350 is, but they are really a fine looking car!

I have experienced a 7500 rpm launch in a moderately upgraded AWD Eclipse. Leaves the line hard and gets up to speed quickly. Personally, I would not want to race a modified AWD turbo car from a stoplight or 1/4 mile for pink slips; especially when using a standard IRS Cobra that is really not optimum for traction or straight line drag racing. Maybe from a 10-15mph roll though or with a nice 9"/4-link setup and slicks at a strip. An AWD V8 replica Cobra with modern tire technology would be an interesting and cool comparison. Hopefully the Aussie guy will report on the results and stats. Hmmmm.
