Red face Gauges pegged to the right!

Hey guys,
I dont know what the heck I could have done wrong. I conected all of my A&C supplied S.W. gauges, per the instructions and as soon as I turned the ignition to on the oil, temp, and fuel pegged to the right and remained that way engine running or not and still even with the senders disconected and the battery disconected. The tach that is fed from the MSD box is not working either. Any thoughts? other than I really mucked up, Sam

Polarity ....... (1.) The direction of current flow determines direction or DEFLECTION of meter movement (2.) and the reference to ground (amount of Resistance = OHMS) determines the amount of movement.
Check gauges to see if they are for a negative ground system or a positive ground system.

Check the voltage input. Some are 5 volt.

Sam,

since the gauges moved to the right, sounds like the polarity is correct. I would check to see if you have the correct sending units connected to the correct gauges. All gauges just measure current flow (ammmeters) correlated to a scale that represents another unit. (temp) The meters may have been damaged when the wrong strength signal from a sender was sent to the unit that could not handle the current being measured.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Regards,

You probably have live wire to the guage and then directly to ground.Remember that the current must go from the battery to the ignition switch-to the guage-to the sender- then to ground. Also remember the sender grounds itself when attached to the block with the exception of the fuel sender which will have to be grounded.
Good luck.If you like I could send you a basic schematic.
Good luck

One switched 12 volt wire goes to the gauge (+) pole, the sending unit connects to the other side of gauge (-). Ohms and resistance change at sending unit is based on temperature, or pressure from oil pump causing gauge reading to change.

Lightbulb Boy do I feel Stupid!

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the good advice, all of it made me go back and trace all my connections. I found the problem and I hate to admit it, but it was me. Looking at all the wires I spent a great deal of time labeling, I found one I forgot to connect. You know the guages work much better when you give them power. I know, duh! Thanks again, Sam

I have the same problem except it is only with the fuel gauge. Mine are Smith's so does that mean they are all negative ground? When I hook the wires to the gauge it pegs to the right and stays there. I haven't traced all the wires down yet but tomorrow I'll check to see if the ground at the sender is OK and at the gauge. Is there anything else I should check?

Thanks, Paul
