I sure hope so... There shouldn't be great loads on them and there are five per skin.
I first applied a layer of matt and then several more over the bracket. I havnt had any success in the past fibreglassing alloy but I’m terrible with fibreglass

As good as it was there were always going to be limitations on painting quality when spraying the car in a backyard shed. I'd tried to convince myself it was patina but in some lighting situations some areas looked a bit 'iffy'. I'd also clumsily taken a chip out of a rear guard and filling the crevice with droplets of paint would mean cutting back and smoothing off around that area, with the associated 'blending-in' concerns.
To cut the details of a long, nerve-racking, experience short I ended up going all over the car with 1000, then 2000 and finally 3000 grit wet-n-dry, pressing very lightly on any edges. I'd research buffing and polishing techniques on the web and asked a few friends for advice but I came to the conclusion I'd pushed my luck about as far as I was game. I contacted a car-detailer and he came and finished it off. I'm not sure that anyone is visiting this forum these days but I thought I'd post this anyway.
Following a thoroughly enjoyable 2 week Autumn tour around Tasmania last year we are soon to embark on a tour of the Great Ocean Road and the wine regions of South Australia. We will be attending a Cars & Coffee morning at The Rezz in Adelaide on Easter Sunday. I've appreciated the advice and feedback from S Aus members on here, and others, and it would be great to actually meet face to face if anyone could make it on that morning. regards. |

Last Autumn I loaded half my workshop into the boot and drove it 4,500 km around Tassie and it never skipped a beat. This time I'm taking a few cable ties - but don't tell Murphy! |

i think half my problem is after racing speedway for 20 odd yrs time spent on perfection where a bit of rough bodywork can have a sticker plastered over it and we tear up panels at such a rate we tend to just slapem together from 20ft the cars look great so my patience level on perfection is not that great . but watching you has inspired me to slow down take a deep breath relax and have a go at some stuff i would have farmed out not so long ago . i love the look of this car and will try and keep that day free while you are in sa and shake your hand on a job well done , cheers dean |
Dean, don't be misled by the 'vaseline-on-the-lens' shots. This car was built in a suburban backyard shed and there is plenty of evidence of that to be seen. GTOs were racing cars from the early 60s and as someone who raced cars in the 60s and 70s I know that preparation was all about performance not appearance. If you ask me, those trailer-queen GTOs lined up on the lawn at Pebble Beach are a gross misrepresentation. At Laguna Seca I saw the only un-molested GTO and it looked like it had been maintained in a suburban backyard shed so I'm not ashamed of mine.
Setting off tomorrow on our trip and looking forward to meeting yourself and other Redbacks at the Rezz on Easter Sunday. |
