Leaking AN Joints
Hi All,
I am putting the body on my car for the final time tomorrow and just in the process of getting everything that will be difficult to access all finalised.
I tested my fuel system for the first time last night and i have a couple of AN fittings that have a very small leak. One at the fuel pump and one at the fuel rail. Its not even enough to drip! The bottom of the joint is slightly wet with fuel after holding pressure for about 10mins and evaporates before it gets big enough to be a drip. So very very small leak but enough to be a pain.
Funnily enough, i thought the flares i did might leak, but these are fine, its just where the an fittings screw onto couples/fittings. Ive tried cleaning them out and retightening but still getting the leaks. They are brand new from summit and are all the correct 37' fittings.
Any tips for getting a good seal on AN joints?
At least where the leaks are can be easily accessed with the body on, but i would still like to get the fuel system all leak free before body on.
Cheers.

initially a little lube on the threads and flare help. work the joint to let the flare portion become accustomed to each other, like 5 lbs then release, 6 or 7 times, then the last one maybe 10 lbs. lb.'age amount is just an example. shouldn't take much to make it seal, this also works good for brake fittings.

Check the male flare for a complete circle on the 37degree face, indicating a complete seal. It may just need a little more grunt. However there are formed aluminum faces that fit over the existing male flare and are made of dead soft aluminum. They create a new sealing surface and work well. I had a leak at the oil cooler this eliminated it. Double check the installation of the hose end to the hose.

Lap those fittings
Another option I have used for minor weepage is lapping the fittings. You add a little valve lapping compound around the male flare seal surface. Install the opposite fitting and just lightly snug up the nut.
Now rotate the fitting back and forth several times. Disassemble the fitting and inspect the sealing surfaces, you should have a nice even "lapped" ring on each angular surface.
You may have to repeat the process to remove any minor high or low spots on the seal surfaces. Clean all the grit off and reassemble the fittings with oil or Never Seize on the threads. This process worked for me when I had damp fuel and oil connections with the AN fittings...

I had some problems with my AN fittings leaking.
I found the solution, I used bigger spanners!
Regards.

Summit sell an amazing amount of stuff...every brand under the sun. I suspect that their own ..Summit.. brand is China sourced. Do what the others suggest. A bit of lapping should do. Good luck.

Got some new fittings today and it seems to be right now. I have tested it and will leave it pressurised overnight to check for leaks. Thanks for the help.

Zedn, do you mean the leak was where an AN fitting connected to another AN fitting, rather than an AN fitting to a pipe?

Both. One was at the fuel rail where I have a 90 deg connecting to a fuel rail adaptor. The other was where I flared a pipe coming out of the fuel pump holder. The pipe from the fuel pump had a seam in it so I ended up having to use rubber hose. Hope it doesn't leak.
Putting the body on today. Hope it fits and doesn't scratch any paint!

Zedn, I had a similar problem and found that Mando's method resolved it, also I found the flare etc wasnt square to the AN fitting, once I squared it up it was ok. Those little leaks are hard to find as the fuel evaoprates pretty quicky on the very small leaks.
Good luck with getting the body back on - sounds like you are making great progress
cheers Gregg
