Default tyres or tires

Craig, stout.. love it.

With the industry changing quite radically with the onset of AP and more older imported left hookers landing on our shores we certainly seem to be seeing a lot more "period style" cars around. The 15 inch wheels etc etc certainly is making their presence felt. Personally I love them.

At the risk of asking a question that may or may not have been answered already... reading the Avon website it states the Avon CR6ZZ is EXEMPT from the EU tyre labelling regulation EC1222/2009 and is designed to be fitted only to vehicles registered for the first time before 1 October 1990. (I'm not sure how that relates to DOT??)

But what are the insurance ramifications if any of running these or the Billboard tyres seen on Ronny's, Box or your car? I know Bernie has 2 sets, for show and DOT for road use...

Certainly, without doubt the direction I'd go for a street cobra of 40... and what I'd want to do. But curious as to views and opinions...... and dare I say it .....legal liability?

Spooky, I agree with you completely. I also want to know about the legalities of running Billboards on Australian roads because I'd love a set too!

Who cares????

If you want to read all the agonising and hand-wringing you can stand concerning this subject, hop over to the US forum -- there are pages and pages and pages about are they legal? do they understeer? do they flat-spot? do the sidewalls crack? does the writing fade? yada yada yada ad infinitum. To repeat -- who bloody cares???

They're not everyone's cup of tea, and there is the perception (unconfirmed by all accounts) that some insurance companies in the US have reservations about them, BUT if you like 'em, if you want 'em and if you feel that their looks performance handling whatever, outpoint the whining of the nervous nellies, then just buy a set!!

Bloody hell -- life's too short!

You might care if you have an incident and the insurance company says, "ah, no."

Merry Christmas

Don, that's a bit silly. It's a fair question to ask and to answer who cares is a bit rough.

The apparent answer in short from engineer and well versed cobra philes and manufacturers are the Tyres are not street legal dot approved and the ramifications as such should an injury or worse accident occur from a 3rd party perspective seems perilous at best. If such an event did occur.... you use, you lose.

Live pipes, tb's etc may not fall into legal ICVs but they in their own existence would be hard pressed to be proven as being the sole contributor to an accident for example whereas using a tyre that states on its sidewall "for racing purposes only" would seemingly make it far easier to afflict cause.

I'm more than open and happy to be shown otherwise. I'd love a set, but to buy and run them on a who cares rationale is nutso imo at best.

Sorry Don but with respect I disagree.

Ps. The exemption on the avons is speed rating related.

Modena and Spooky..... That's exactly where I was going.

As much as I love the Billboard look and am confident that I can deal with their eccentricities, I'm not that keen on running them on a $75K+ car and then after an accident the insurance company informing me they're not going to cover the car (and also the car I may have hit) because of the 'For Racing Use Only' tyres.

Maybe you have squillions tucked away under your mattress so to 'lose' a Cobra may not mean that much to you. But I'm not a rich man and I cannot afford to throw my car away!

So yes Don, who bloody cares?? I care!

I sent Spook my thoughts via PM a day or two ago. Suffice to say, yep I care as well and I don't have an opinion about other people's risk tolerance or risk aversion. A mate of mine had a lady walk in front of his street registered car while he was on the return road at Willowbank Raceway and he hit her at low speed. The ensuing legal case about vehicle insurance, compliance, liability and CTP coverage were all a focus, so Billboards or full slicks could be a worry even driving around in the pits.
I've had previous cars that were more closely aligned to Don's "life's too short" philosophy, but I'm a bit more careful now.

I'm keeping it "cordial", but it's Christmas Day so I'm heading back to the fridge to grab another 150 Lashes beer. Tasty!

Merry Christmas everyone.

I knew I spelt that wrong! I'm mixing my cordials too strong today...

Perhaps legalities would define insurability? Shannon's will insure your car no probs with these....if stolen covered all inclusive. . But in an accident causing injury only those using them will feel confident answering that question.

Always do your research and ensure its in writing by whoever the authority is. Once you got that go for broke.

My sentiments exactly Spooky, and no offence taken mate -- that's what the forum's all about, a free exchange of ideas,

Do your own research, make your own informed decision, and then live with it. Just like most things in life really.

If you're the type who likes everything nailed down tight, all the "i"s dotted and all the "t"s crossed, then Billboards may not be for you, but in my opinion a Billboard-shod tough-looking Cobra is right up there among the most stirring sights of the automotive world.

When I was searching, there was no Aussie distributer, not sure if that is different now?

I went to Roger Krause racing.
