fuel sender leak
help or advice needed
I have a VDO fuel sender in my tank but I have had 4 rubber gaskets turn to goop [ rubber just melted ]
so next I rang vdo supplier whom told me that it shouldn't happen & I must be using racing fuel [ no way just pump unleaded
so I have tried direct stick with threebond leaked
so cleaned & used stag
leaked thru the threads only so now
its to ask for any ideas as the tank is alloy & the gauge is as per manufactures fitment instruction
it only leaks when you fill it up til it gets down
I have checked if I have pressure build up ................no so its just load pressure leak
any ideas to seal .................& yes the wife said already don't fill it to the top
but the leak is a weep only but still a leak
ANY HELP PLEASE

Rob, I had the same problem, I just sealed all the threads/screws/nuts and perimeter of sender with plenty of Stag (from memory - brown sticky stuff) which kept the fumes at bay.

I made my own cork gasket when I couldn't get one a few years back and coated both sides and the screw threads with Threebond 1104.
Fuel resistant, and much thinner than any RTV etc they make. Similar to Stag.
Here's one example:

Works a treat, doesn't go off in the tube either, my tube is 8 years old now.

hi guys
tenrocco I have a cork gasket with stag on both sides
dc7531 its permertex gasket sealer but I didn't do the threads
gaz64 I tried the three bond first & it dried so I refuelled & it leaked after a day or 2 & turned soft [like hot chewing gum ]
so now i'll try removing each screw & coating all threads & re fitting after I drain the tank down again

Hi Rob, I have made my gaskets with neoprene from Clark rubber.
There is one 3mm which has a high fuel resistance, for memory they claimed fuel proof, however I thought this a big claim.
Colour is white and it did not deteriorate or deform. I have an off cut if you want (not sure what size you need)I can send to you.

You could try the old fashion product called GASKET GOO on a home made card board gasket,each side,then after installing coat the screw heads and gasket perimeter.
I have used corn flakes box countless times for making gaskets

Leigh, The Neoprene you speak of is probably "Nitrile" synthetic rubber.
Reasonably resistant to oil, fuel, and other chemicals.
Depends on Nitrile content within the rubber. Higher Nitrile content increases fuel resistance, but product becomes less flexible. muzzza

That sounds familiar, but I just had a look on Clark rubber and they have list for neoprene.
I would have to check.
Anyway, it's what I was suggested to use for a replacement gasket, and I never got any leaking or fuel smell in the trunk.

well to day I drained fuel again & removed all screws 1 at a time & used permatex on the whole thread so now till tomorrow to refill to see if any leaks
keep all posted

I used dry rubber/cork gaskets with sealer on the screw threads......that's where the vapor comes through....

Highly saturated nitrile is resistant to petroleum products. For a gasket you want a sheet of 50 durometer.

WELL I JUST RE FUELLED IT AGAIN & LOW & BEHOLD NO WEEPS so FAR SO TONIGHT WE WILL SEE
it usually takes about half An hour till it starts .......so far no leaks

Wasn't neoprene Rob. It was 3mm Black Nitrile.

well it leaked again so I used rebel1 NITRILE & punched all the holes under size so to thread the gasket on & sealed with permatec fuel sealer [ like stag ] & refitted
no thread leak of anytype for now !!

I use loctite 567 all the time for work, it's suitable for all hydrocarbons so it maybe worth a go if you are still struggling to fix the leak.
