Scoop Problems

Okay,

On to those small jobs that need to be sorted before they become big jobs:

As most know my DRB 2000 scoop is pretty wide. At high speed it flexes such that it has started to crack at the two front corners where it bonds to the bonnet.

(Well you should'nt drive so bloody fast )

I have noticed on some DRB's that the scoop is blanked off, which obviously makes it more rigid, but I think it only makes the whole arrangement false.

I intend fixing some aluminium grill mesh to the opening, as per my oil cooler air intakes at the front of the car. However, unsure on how to fix the mesh in that my priority is to make the scoop rigid and stop the cracks becoming bigger.

The lower edge shouldn't be a drama as the bonnet is double skinned, but the top of the scoop is single skinned.

Help needed for:

1. What is the tydiest way of fixing the mesh to the top of the scoop without drilling all the way through the glass; and

2. Again what fixing works best when drilling into the glass i.e. some sort of glued screw arrangement.

hi pete the scoop probably was never fitted properly ie fibreglassed to the bonnet. the easy fix would be to bond a rib under the front edge useing sikerlflex or silicone if done right it will stop the flex and you wont damage the paint. if you are going to fix the cracks you will have to grind out all the bog around the scoop and glass it down.

Venom Customs come to the rescue.

You are probably right - made worse by the fact that the scoop is so big (wide).

That is why I thought it needed to be made more rigid by strengthening the opening itself.

May still pursue the aluminium mesh idea using sikerflex to bond the top of the mesh to the underside of the scoop assuming it is strong enough to bond it.

I don't want to drill through the top of the scoop so was wondering what the best solution would be to "bond" the mesh to the top of the scoop.

Hi Pete,

For your mesh grill I would probably fold the mesh into a Z shape and bond it to the inside of the scoop and the inside of the bonet. If you're careful and put a couple of layers of masking tape on the paint you should be able to form the mesh to the curve inside the scoop and on the inside of the bonet.

To bond you could use either sikerlflex as Scott suggested with the brace. You could also sand the paint under the mesh back to the glass and bond it with some resin flowed through the mesh onto the scoop. You would have to be careful and possibly make up a dam with plastacene to keep the resin in place till it set. You could then just repaint the underside of the hood or touch up where you've bonded the mesh.

I presume sikerlflex or sikerflex is actually sikaflex (use it all the time to stick the tiles on my pool!!!)

Aluminium mesh fitted and scoop does'nt seem to flex as much.
