Default Power Steering - Return Hose Fitting

Hi All,

Pls excuse long post.

I have a 2008 CR chassis that uses a Commodore VP Power Steering Rack.

I got a guy from ENZED to re-jig my High Pressure Hose which fits just nicely.

My problem is that he didnt have a fitting to go on to the Rack for my low pressure return hose (I have plently of hose but no barb fitting to screw in to the steering rack).

Any smart people out there know where and what size barb (screww thread I mean) I should get?

Also one other technical thing I wanted to check. My engine is from a VY Commodore and came with the high pressure hose/fitting and after modifications just screwed in to the steering rack nicely. It screwed in to the smaller sized hole which I assume is the "input". I assumed the low pressure return would be the larger hole? i.e. low pressure more volume/expansion etc?.

I am thinking of a couple of approaches:
- go to wrecker and get one off a VP and modify
- get new one of Holden and modify
- try and a fitting if I know what size.

Lastly - I understnd on the production VP the return hose winds its way around a bit for "coolin" reasons. I was not thinking of doing this and just having the barb fitting go straight in to the flexible hose and then to the reservoir.

Gday Gregg - they tend to have 2 sizes on these fittings. On the VL rack im pretty sure the inlet is 16mm x 1.5, and the return is 18mm x 1.5

Bugger - I was hoping the fitting that came with my VY Gen III was the right one. Looks like I'll have to get the ENZED man back to fix it.

I thought high pressure = smaller fitting (and the VY one screwed straight in to the smaller sized hole). Looks like back to the drawing board.

Still not 100% sure which hole size is which, but on the VL rack the fitting furthest to the right (drivers side) is high pressure, and the other is return. And VP could be different....not very helpful, sorry.

EDIT - just checked my notes and it looks like your OK - (outer one )16mm) is the high, and the return 18mm is the hole further inboard.

Mate, thanks heaps. I was not looking forward to re-jigging it. The ENZED guy did such a neat job.

Any ideas where I could get a fitting to suit the return hose i.e. I just need a barb fitting as I have plenty of hose. Other than wrecker or buying the whole return line from Holden?

I would recomend fitting a cooler in line Gregg, I have no experience regarding the power steering or cooler in Cobra.
But after working with GMH from 1992 until 2007, they need the cooling.
I saw a mates VT SS after some "spirited" driving, it melted all the plastic clips on the power steering lines (and that was with the factory cooler)

I think most guys who are running PS have ditched the stock reservoir and lines and gone braided hose. Also run a cooler as David said, again most the guys up here have the finned inline type.

I used this Moroso one which has an inbuilt filter.

thanks Boxhead. will check in to this with Ian at CR to see what he has found with the Cobra i.e. being a lighter car etc.

Gregg,

Weight will not have much to do with it, it will be more about how you drive and if you are going to do a bit of racing.

I have a cooler and a big custom reservoir and still run pretty hot in normal driving.

Thanks Ben for the advice.

Where did you get you cooler from?

Also the biggest problem I have at present is finding the fitting from the Power Steering Output to the cooler.

Tenrocca mentioned today its a 18mm 1.5 fitting. I am looking for this fitting to fit my reservoir hose to etc (temporary only).

I have struggled to find any suppliers on the internet today.

I was thinking of connecting without the cooler temporarily so I could start my Engine this weekend, but its looking a bit shaky at the moment.

Get a second hand hose from a wrecking yard or something similar.

Atleast then you will be able to do a temporary jobbie to get the car started.

Went to pick-a-part today and pulled a part of a VP commodore for $1.

The Horn (I also retrieved) cost more than this.
