Changing states with a new car.

Most of you will know where I'm going with this

If you move states and wish to register your vehicle in the new state, and your vehicle is under 3 years old, it doesn't require a full inspection. It only needs an identification check (VIN, Engine no.) to confirm the vehicle's identity.

As many of you are aware, I am selling my Cobra. It is listed as a December 2008 car. In theory, it should only need an identification check, if it was sold to an interstate buyer.

How does this sound??? Would someone get away with it???

From what I know it will require an physical inspection still in some states.

Actually I thought the biggest problem with new cars was transferring them into the more restrictive emissions states like NSW(ACT) & VIC. It can be seen as a way to circumvent the approval rules, especially emissions. I'm no expert, but there seems to be a minimum age(like 12 months) before you can transfer them without being engineered for the current requirements in the destination state.

Not an expert either, but I believe to get a car registered here in NSW you need a “Blue Slip” inspection.

After trawling through a few rego sites it appears that an inspection is required.



If you move the vehicle from state to state in your name you present the vehicle for inspection of the Vin number and engine number.

Again as the vehicle is staying in your name, there appears to be no transfer dollars required for stamp duty - as there is no purchase.

Check with the office in your state.

I'd be wary about the compliance issues.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a demand to have a car meet certain ADRs, such as side pipe and noise compliance if moving into a State with tougher compliance needs.

Do the research as any potential buyer would be far more likely to buy knowing what they are up for than if buying blind.
