Coil Over Conversion

Hi,

I still have Mustang II suspension front and rear and I have finally make a commitment to convert to coil overs.

From a past post I think I can just bolt in a pair of QA-1 shocks in the front. Any other suggestions?

I am unsure about the rear. What is involved in installing coil overs in the rear?? Admittedly- I am a little naive on suspension so specific info would be appreciated.

Some added information:
Does the 4 link need to be changed?
Do I use the same top shock mount for the coil over in the rear?

FYI-The car is just driven on the street.

All right,

I learned that the rear coil overs can just bolt in place of the standard shock.

Does anyone know the QA1 part # for the rear?

I already have the front Part # 122-ms1365 (365lb spring)

Wow, what a relief. I thought I had answered this post and couldn't find my post. So I thought I had really lost my mind. Now I found it in another forum, All Cobra Talk, I think it is. I thought that I had the papers that came with my set up but I just looked and can't find any. Sorry.

Jams, I would give you the # if I could but I built my own coilovers, I got hd shocks for 89 mustang rear, from autozone, about $23 each, 200# springs for $49.95 ea. and coilover kits for about $41.00 ea. Springs and coiloverkits come from speedway motors. web site www.speedwaymotors.com
My rearend is not like anyother in a B&B, it is a shorten chev with 3 link hookup.

I was not aware you could build your own coil overs. If I understand it correctly...you take an ordinary shock, buy the conversion kit and spring and you got yourself a coil over shock???

New rear coil overs are in and WOW what a difference. Had I known it would make that much of a differecne in my ride I would have done it 2 years ago. For all those with stock MUstang II consider upgrading!

Jams, I also have an old B&B with Mustang II front and ford 9" rear. So you used Part # 122-ms1365 (365lb spring in the front and it bolted right in? What did you use in the rear. I'm looking for a better ride.

Hi Poolw,

So far I just did the back. and it makes such a big difference. Below are the part #'s from Summit. For the rear the only thing you need to do is fab a 1" spacer to stop the coil from hitting something. Look for a prior post. Someone posted a great picture. The spacer went on the lower mount.

I will be ordering the the front coil-over conversion kit very soon. It is going to be my Spring project. From what I know they just bolt right in.

They also have another kit with different weight springs.

I see they also offer 500lb front Springs. I guess those would be a little too heavy?? Unless you have a big block!

Hi fellow B&B owners . I have been wondering does anyone have a B&B with airride suspenion?

Jams, I was running 500 lb springs in the front of mine with a small block and the ride was excellent. I now run 600 lb spings with my 427. If you need a set of 500 lb springs I will sell you mine for cheap, $50. If you ever decide to road race your Cobra you will be glad you have the 500 lb springs.

The 375 pounders were too soft for you? With the roads in my neck of the woods, I am thinking about a stiffer spring. I will let you know. Trying to make my final decision right now.

Are the 500lb springs the same lengthas the 375lb springs??? Chrome or Powercoated?

There are no dumb questions.

Yes, the shock and spring were removed. Bottom of coil over mounts to original shock mount. You will probably need about an 1" spacer so it doesn't rub. I fabbed the spacer out of a piece of weightlifting bar. Just cut it to lengthe and drilled a hole in the middle. A friend with a machine shop can make it in 5 min. As far as the upper mount goes there is an upper angle iron piece with a hole in it. The upper shock stud(I think it is called) is in-line with the shock not perpendicular. Depending on your shock you might have to convert. I had to, it cost about 30 bucks. I guess I left that out of the parts list.


There is a good picture in a prior post that helped me. I will do a search if I can't find it, I have one on my Desktop computer. I am laptopping right now.
