Try attaching some pieces of the "hooked" side of the wide Velcro that you can find in hardware stores to the bottom of the mats. That holds the mats well to the carpet, but allows them to be easily removed for cleaning.
Don't feel bad. I saw a video the other day about a guy who had a thermos bottle roll between the firewall and the brake pedal. That made stopping rather interesting to say the least. Good thing he had a handbrake
