				 CHP and BAR recommendations
 Hi Guys
I want to first thank all of you, you've helped educate me on the SB-100 and SPCN registration process. I've already secured a sequence number and I'm now getting ready to schedule my appointments with the CHP and BAR

The Castro Valley and Hayward CHP offices are the closest to me. Any comments as to the "friendliness" of these office as it pertains to our cars or should I steer clear?

and as for the BAR, I have the 800 number but is there just one location in the Bay Area?

 thanks!

 Hello Art,
My cobra is (at the moment) still getting worked on. But i was wondering if you'd like to share some information or processes that you went through in getting your SB100 and if possible adding in some costs.. (only if you can) or would like to PM me. (That'd be GREATLY appreciated)

I would hopefully like to get it running by the summer so maybe i can prepare myself mentally && FINANCIALLY LOL.. fingers crossed*

Thank you,
Kristen

 Hi Kristen
Congrats on the build!
Follow this link:
http://www.newmustangranch.com/SPCNS.pdf
It explains everything in detail from the DMV visit to the CHP and BAR inspections to the final registration and title process. I would add that the document was written in 2009 when SB-100's were in high demand so there are some up front comments that do not apply today. For example I went in on December 21st and got an SB-100 number and there were still a dozen or so still available (that would have been unheard of a few years ago)

Read through the pdf and feel free to PM me with questions. I'm still in the middle of the process but have gone through the first several steps which were relatively painless

good luck!

I would steer clear of the Hayward CHP, as I did not have a good experience with them. Unfortunately the officer who did VIN verifications in San Jose is no longer doing so.
 Good luck,
 Randy...

Good to know Randy. My appointment is with the Castro Valley CHP this week (assuming it doesn't rain)
Can you elaborate on your experience, what made it a less than desirable experience

Anyway, my only experience with the Hayward CHP was a phone call, where I explained my complicated title story to the CHP officer, who in turn told me that if I brought my SPF to their office for a VIN verification, then he would impound it. I hung up the phone... Needless to say, I cannot recommend the Hayward CHP for VIN verifications.

I'm sure your experience will be like many 100's of others and be smooth with no hiccups or complications. The DMV, CHP and BAR are pretty well versed on this subject by now.

Good luck,
Randy... |

Quick update for those who are going through the registration process. I had a great experience at the Oakland CHP office this afternoon. Officer accepted the VIN sequence already on the car and approved the number and VIN location on the chassis and body.
My next stop is the BAR referee in Alameda on Tuesday. If all goes well there I should be ready to go to the DMV for my final registration the following week

Make sure if you have a breather on the other valve cover (not the pcv side) that it does NOT vent directly to the outside air. It must vent to the air cleaner.
If you do not do this, you will fail and have to go back after you have fixed it.

And from what I understand, the hose needs to be stamped 'Anti-Smog / PCV Hose' or similar verbiage. Unmarked hose, heater hose, fuel line and such will not pass. |

Sheesh, I remember WAY back in the old days, back in 2008, when a PCV system wasn't required. Them were the days. |

as the author of the 2009 SPCNS document , I am proud that it has helped real people make a sensible pathway of the process.
In our recent experience, BAR is requiring a enclosed PCV system that feeds the blow-by air from the air cleaner vs a stand alone vented oil filler cap.

this was actually a 1966' change to the cars, and while it is not technically correct, it will save .00034 polar bear pelts per Millennial equinox, so they are making us do it, - whatever.

the process still works , and you drive your dream. That is what matters.

Steve

 Thanks Steve
Your "SB100 Bible" has been very helpful in terms of deciphering the process as well as anticipating pitfalls. I think the primary change since you wrote the document is that it's much easier to get an SB-100 nowadays, given my experience securing #449 on December 21st! I think that would have been the equivalent of seeing a unicorn back in 2008/2009

anyway, hopefully all goes smoothly this week and I can head back to DMV to secure title/registration and then get my personalized license plate.

Will update all after I visit BAR

Rather than start another CHP inspection thread, thought I would post a question in Art's thread ...
Will be headed for the CHP inspection soon. I have all the DMV paperwork in order including my SB-100 number, MSO, TOP, proof of insurance and a pile of receipts.

Looking for recent recommendations of Bay Area CHP offices & officers that are Cobra friendly. Sounds like Art had a good experience at the Oakland CHP office, any other recommendations?

 Thanks.

tkb, san leandro is also a good location. I spoke with the officer there and he was well informed regarding the process and had experience inspecting our cobras.
 good luck

Tim, I had a good experience at the Aptos office. Mine was very easy though, my car was previously registered.

 Tim,
I had a great experience with the San Jose Brokaw office. I met with Officer Rosconi, big Mustang guy. I understand he is no longer with that office, but have heard that others are easy to deal with.
