Default New Tires... 315/35-17's...

I'm preparing for my annual trip to Huntington Beach and my Nitto 555 Drag Radials probably need to be replaced after 17,000+ miles. I don't see any nylon or steel belts showing (my typical visual when I decide to replace tires) but I am at the wear-bars which are beginning to wear off as well so looking at Tire Rack, I see very limited manufacturers for "Summer Only" type tires.

The choices based on Tire Rack, is:

Kumho Escta XS Extreme Summer Performance
Goodyear F1 GS-D3 Max. Performance
Sumitomo HTR-Z Ultra High-Performance Summer

I'm thinking of the Goodyear F1's because the tread depth is fairly good ( 10/32" ), and generally is touted as a good performance tire. Any other suggestions? Anyone local I could buy and mount them on my rims? (I would bring the wheels in myself since the FFR is o blocks at the moment.)

TIA,

-Herman

Go to tirerack, search by size, and filter by customer rating. Tirerack has great performance data (they do a lot of their own testing) and you can do some interesting side-by-side comparisons.

That may help you get close...

I have Michelin PS2s on my Superformance (275/40/17 front, 335/35/17 rear IIRC) and like them a lot.

I did that, and that's what Tire Rack shows as my options for street; the rest were all drag radials or shaved. The older FFR Mk3.1, we sort of maxed out at 315 cross section; some had modified a bit of the forward splash to avoid interference, and get 335's in there but my current 315's already rub the forward splash panel at full suspension movement. I could probably get spacers but at the moment, so long as I can get a 315, I'm probably sticking to that size.

Could you comment on the handling with the 555s?

I also have the Michelin PS2 on mine...... They are great and stand up to the abuse.

I also thought they had the PS2 in the 315?? I know my Michelin were expensive but well worth it!! I know you can have them shipped to Custom alignment. Not sure what the charge to mount and balance??

What about the Sumitomo HTR Z? Hella cheap!! Sure isn't much out there. I would try doing a search on the actual tire web sites.

I did a little digging and there is a Nitto NT555 Extreme Performance that's NOT the Drag Radial, and is priced at $212 ea. but appears I'll have to have them order it for me. But it's far cheaper than the Goodyears and it will match up to the NT555 front tires which are barely worn. These are normal tread depth so they should last a lot longer.

DON"T GET THE CRAPOTOMOS!

That said, Nitto NT05s are another choice (NT05s are the high performance, NT05Rs are drag radials). Lots of guys running the Kumhos and love them. I've got Kumhos on the front and Nitto NT05Rs on the rear.

Are the PS2's far better than the PS's??? I thought the Pilot Sports were OK also until I got a set of NT01's. Maybe they changed something substantial in the tire?

I'm running the Kumho Ecsta XSs. I previously ran the Michellin Pilot Sports (not the PS2s) and I like the Kumho's a lot. My Michellin's were pretty old and hard by the time I wore them out, but the Kumho's are way stickier.

Hi Herman,

Like Scott said, have Tire Rack drop ship to Custom Alignment. THey will do them loose and actually make it right. I currently have 315 F1 Goodyears on my car and can't complain. They have been wearing well, handle autocross well and don't have any real negative qualities, at least as of yet.

I put in an order for the Nitto NT555 Extreme Performance tires; $212 ea. so I should have those on the rims by Saturday.
