Question Sb 100

Hi guys,

I just scheduled an appointment with a DMV office so I can begin the registration process of my cobra before all the available slots for this year dissappear. My last visit to the DMV was to pick up some personalized plates and on my way out, the line to the info table was empty. I decided to ask the attendant for any paperwork regarding SB 100 and she handed me a few papers. I scanned the papers on my way out to the parking lot and began to chuckle! I was given a form for "Specialty Construction EQUIPMENT" that would be used on the highway during transport. Lots of examples of farm machinery were given on one page........hmmmmm..... I wonder if my cobra could be used as a hay baler!!! Could be an entertaining subject for Monster Garage!

Anyway, does anyone have something like a form number or any other information to make it easier for me when I show up for my appointment? I can already see the blank looks on their faces when I tell them I want to register my car under SB 100.

Oh yeah...the car's current condition is just the way I got it from SPF in November........no drivetrain! I just want to reserve a spot before they run out! I realize that the CHP and BAR portion of the process will have to come later when I get it running in two months.....errrr ahh.... I mean "TWO WEEKS"!

Gene,

The DMV there should have a memo that they can look at telling them just what forms and procedures to use with SB-100. I am sure they issued them to all DMVs since there was so much confusion when it first became law. If the clerk can't help you ask for a supervisor and tell them to look at the memo or instructions that were sent out for dealing with SB-100. Our DMV has did enough of them now that most of the clerks don't even have to refer to any references.

Ron

Gene,

Go here: http://www.cobratrader.com/registrationCA.html

It gives you the name of each form that you need to fill out (which you can download from the DMV site) and it gives you the number of the DMV memo that tells the clerk how to enter everything in the computer. They'll give you a temporary operating permit that's good for about 2-3 months and they'll expect you to complete the CHP and BAR visits by then. I suspect you can get a couple of extensions though.

Thumbs up I completed my registration recently

The cobratrader post is very helpful. I don't recall the exact form number but it was a standard form. Sounds like what they gave you was not correct. They gave me a temp permit that was good for one month (actually about 6 weeks) and gave me one extension (one more month) but noted on my form that it was the last extension without cause. What constitutes cause I do not know. The last number I heard was someone had SB100 # 300 something so I think getting the ball rolling is a good plan. The only disadvantage I can see is not getting the car done for the CHP BAR inspections in a timely fashion and having to explain to the DMV why not. Here is a link to the thread for my registration process. My CA registration story
Ron's sugesstion of getting a supervisor to help you is a good one. I got lots of blank stares until I found the lady who ended up helping me. Email me if you have any other questions, I am by no means any sort of an expert but I might be able to point you in the right direction.

You need to wait until you receive your sequence number in the mail before scheduling BAR (I got #382 on Tuesday and talked to them today, this is what they told me).

Default No certificate=no fun.

That is correct. The BAR ref will not do anything unless you have the certificate. Mine showed up only about five days after I went to the DMV and the appointments are usually a week or more out into the future.

Thanks for all the helpful info everyone posted on this matter. I will use my charm and do my best to get the "extensions" out as far as possible when the time comes.

I can't wait for the car to be running this summer so I can become a participant rather than a spectator at the saturday breakfast gatherings and special events. Once the car is complete, I'm sure many of you will agree with me that it was worth the wait!

Randy,
How did you manage to get the number today and had the vin verification done already?

Tinker51 - "You need to wait until you receive your sequence number in the mail before scheduling BAR (I got #382 on Tuesday and talked to them today, this is what they told me)."

Correct in theory. The DMV set my expectation that the certificate should take 7 to 10 biz days to arrive. So, I will schedule an appointment with the BAR for about 2-3 weeks out. This gets me on the schedule, and I can plan the rest of my life around it. Are you saying that the BAR wants some kinda info off of the certificate before they will make an appointment?

Turk - "How did you manage to get the number today and had the vin verification done already?"

The DMV screwed up on my first visit and didn't get me a sequence number. However they did send me to get a VIN verification. So, yesterday, the DMV got me a sequence number (#390), accepted my VIN verification, and told me to schedule an appointment the BAR for after my certificate arrives in the mail.

Gotta run,
Randy R...

Randy, the exact same thing happened to me. The DMV screwed up and made me get my VIN from the CHP prior to issuing my SB100 number.

Randy, the BAR ref wants to hold the certificate in his hand. You will get it back but you have to have it with you when you show up. If you are comming to breakfast I will show you what I have.
Sam.

I finally got that piece of paper from DMV. A Certified copy of my SB-100 Specially Constructed Vehicle Certificate of Sequence (SPCNS)

Mine happens to be 379.

What I don't understand is, my next appointment is with CHP this coming Wednesday. What VIN number are they going to attach to my car? DO they have the equipment to make some sort of a tag, and do they just make up a number based on the information I have provided them.

Many have said the process was easy. So far it has been, but I am trying to anticipate what is up ahead around the corner.

Turk,
I will shed some light. When the HP looked at my car he simply told to point to where the vin was located. He did not want to come near the car. He then said he would utilize the CSX number. I was glad he made that decision.

Shannon

PS- I do owe him a ride though.

So, my CSX number or my ERA number becomes my new VIN Number? The plate already attached to the car is all that there is to it?

On my FFR I engraved and rivited a VIN plate to the frame with the number matching my manufacturers certificate of origin (my FFR serial number). The CHP took a look at it, decided to use that as my VIN, then engraved and attached an official-looking blue "Replacement Identification Number" plate to a frame cross-member. What he really wanted to do was attach it to the driver's door sill somewhere, but the FFR body doesn't have enough room to do this. He also stressed that I should engrave and attach one or two more VIN plates to various places in the car just to be safe.

There was a guy on ffcobra who went to the CHP without any VIN plates of any kind on his car. The CHP went nuts looking for one, including getting the car on a lift and looking underneath. Then they dropped it off the lift and damaged the car. Last I heard he is still waiting for his reimbursement check.

Default Any vin will do

My car had a vin tag with the SPF # as the vin. The vin tag was the "AC CARS" one from cobra accesories and was rivited on by the guy I bought the car from. The CHP officer I had was really only interested that the number on the paperwork was the same as the one on the car. I got the impression that the actual number is not important only that it is permanently attached (more or less) to the car. So I say to you, come up with a good number (a manufacturers number will do) have it engraved on a data plate and rivet it to the car. I guess you could take the engraved tag and a rivet gun with you.

I got my SB100 certificate in the mail yesterday, so they really do send it out pretty quickly (just got my seq. number Tuesday).

Turk,
Show the CHP your MSO and point to the CSX tag. That's all there is to it, very easy. Light and brake check was easy also, but quite thorough.
