Default Going to get a aftermarket wire harness, should I get...

I have decided I'm going to get a aftermarket wire harness cause I am having issues with the CR1 supplied one, and even if I get the current issues worked out, if I run into issues down the road, is a all white spaghetti mess .

I like the looks of the American Autowire highway system, but I am in between if I should get the ~15 circuit system or the larger ~22 circuit system. I guess the CR2 Cobras used the 15 circuit harness.

Is there a need for more than 15 circuits?
Have any of you with the 15 circuits or similar sized harness wished you had a larger one?

Have you considered using Painless Performance wiring harness? A friend of mine installed one in his troubled Datsun 1600 and it works great.

Also, on SummitRacing.com they list the circuits available. Here's an example:

I went with the American autowire highway 15. The quality is exelent. Your not going to need more than the 15 circuits it comes with.

Haywire Inc. also makes wiring harnesses, very reasonable and well labeled, used them on my build.

How do you get to 15 circuits? Maybe with FI?
My Hurricane uses a Haywire system and they are pretty easy to work with. Good support too. Even for the wiring-challenged like myself! Haywire, Inc. Custom Automotive Wiring

Ron Francis has new one that eliminates relay's and is state of the art. I have a jeep cj-7 that now has stroker 6 cyl engine converted to fuel injection, with AC, power windows, puller fan, high end stereo, air lockers both ends, remote winch and more. Will replace current half new wiring with relays everywhere with this new wiring harness. Going to use one in Chevy street rod also that has every possible thing you can put on car including paddle shifting, air ride. late model fuel injected chevy engine. Look up Ron Francis Blackbox and his wiring system. Call for support.

AIR CONDITIONING ?, NO, POWER WIDOWS ?: NOPE, POWER DOOR LOCKS? NOPE. POWER/HEATED SEATS? NOPE. REMOTE CONTROLLED MIRRORS? NOPE. After Market harness - WRAPPED? NOPE!
CR LABELED HARNESS? EVERY WIRE. FULL WIRING SCHEMATIC? ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE MANUAL!
PROPER GAUGE FOR EVER CIRCUIT? Yep! Wire harness cut to fit every circuit with plugs ? YEP! EFI? NOT LIKELY BUT CR's handles EFI WITHOUT MODIFICATION BUT YOU DO HAVE TO SUPPLY AN ENGINE HARNESS.

$400 to $500.00 unnecessary costs? YEP!

CR's needed/needing MODIFICATION: NOPE.

AND, ONCE AGAIN.....YOUR POINT?

1973 until today, 1 COBRA THRU ??????, Hundreds to THOUSANDS. NOT ONE REPEAT WIRING PROBLEM, NOT ONE!

BUT.....HAVE IT YOUR WAY.

.
Point 1:Every wire is labeled at the termination, not at the fuse panel and it's utter chaos at the fuse panel.
Case in point there are wires coming out of the fuse panel going back into the fuse panel, other wires that are not used and stated to ignore in the manual AND the steering column harness is made of 3 harnesses

Point 2:This is something I do with a heavy heart... I want to save money.

Alas... I am going to take another stab at it. I would much rather save the money and use it elsewhere.

I am running fuel injection and because the engine is using it's own wiring harness I am guessing that CR portion of engine wiring harness that was not used is the reasoning that the gauges are not powered. I guess that I can find another source and live with the chaos.

All cars have relays and the more complicated have lots of relays. You run out of firewall space the more you have to use. You could make your own wiring out of spools of wire on simple systems and you could carry extra Chinese relays so when you see smoke or one sticks on your puller fan you could change it by side of road like some on this site have done.

Just for the record, I have used dozens of ,,,"RON FRANCIS", "PAINLESS" harnesses, I like them too, BUT never heard of the "Black Box"?

DV- what is the need for and result of adding a ground for the sending unit? My gas gauge tends to get a mind of its own sticking on full often, is this solved by adding the ground you speak of?
