Maybe think about mating the gearbox to the engine and slide it in as one.
I did! |
If it is possible, putting the two together outside of the car and then installing as one is easier than trying to line up a transmission after the engine is in. Depends on the configuration of the frame and how many helpers you have.

Mine, however, is reasonably muscular, most likely will be quite noisy and probably f@rt loadly and often; will emit plenty of fumes; will guzzle 'juice' at an above average rate. Sounds like male characteristics to me  Actually, my Alfa was exactly the same. From day #1, his name was Luigi. Here's "cheers" to diversity! Glen |
Jim and BJ,
Comments always appreciated. The engine by itself has been in and out twice to check clearances (exhausts, etc), and also to check the fit of the Toploader (trial fit from underneath) and it was determined that there wasn't sufficient clearance for its side linkages. Should mention that these are very professional blokes, and they well and truly know how to treat a 'box fitment without damaging or stressing the input shaft. The plan is still to fit the engine first and do the final fit of the TKX from underneath. Cheers! Glen |

Hi Glen,
What is the plan for the exhaust system? Do you have some different options, such as having the exhaust exit in front of the rear tire, or are you restricted in what you can run, due to local compliance regulations? - Tim |
Hi Tim,
The plan for the exhausts…. my information had been that I would need an exhaust system that exited at the rear of the car, this information being supplied from a supposedly knowledgeable source. However…. at the workshop last week, discussion turned to the exhaust, and particularly the channels inside the lower side sill panels. These channels are for the exhausts to be accommodated out of sight. My mechanic suggested that the exhausts would/could terminate where most other Cobras exhausts do – in front of the rear wheels. So, still to be decided. The issue with using the concealed channels mentioned above is that they don’t really look wide enough, and I don’t know where the mufflers could be accommodated. They (the two exhausts) may have to be under the floor like most others, and exiting at the rear. Cheers! Glen |

Greetings!
Just come home from the workshop. Engine is in, with both front/side mounts now secured. The bottom of the oil pan sits just above the level of the bottom of the 'chassis' :) Will need a remote oil filter because of clearance issue with LH exhaust primaries. That's OK. TKX is positioned, and ready to slide in. I have made up an adaptor to fit my very nice (and very original looking) shift lever and knob to the TKX - I'm leaving the knob with its 4 speed pattern as per the original 289 cars. More as it happens ...along with some pictures. Cheers! Glen |
Congrats Glen! Not too much longer.

Hello all,
As reported in another thread, engine and gearbox are in. Here's proof.... Attachment 39377 The car's on the floor at the moment, working on the engine front end, so can't take a picture from the underside, but all is square there. Here's a picture of the interior... Attachment 39378 If you look closely enough, you can see the cover on the front gearshift location that's causing some head scratching at the moment. Seats have been out, and are just sitting in there at the moment, so their installed location can't be seen correctly. edit: exhaust primaries are in; final design and routing of the exhaust is still to be decided Cheers, Glen |
Damn, Glen the hole looks so nice being filled a powerplant ;), Cheers my Friend :) Tom.

Glen,
What a wonderful sight to see. Looks like some plumbing and wiring to do, then figure out how best to mount the shifter. Any fitment issues with the drive shaft? Getting closer every day, keep up the great work! - Tim |

Drive shaft? Minor one; the flange was to suit a similar diff to mine but the hole pcd was slightly different. So, set it up on their mill, and machine some new holes. That the drive shaft was quite an easy fit has me still scratching my head about the shifter location. Time to get over that one, yes? A start on wiring is imminent; lucky it is such a simple setup with no ancillaries. Rather than use the supplied loom, will go with a new loom made from scratch; fitting it should then be very easy and fast Cheers! Glen |
Glen,
Congratulations and it is looking great! I wish I could help you with the shifter location issue, but I have no experience or knowledge with that transmission. I hope that it gets solved soon. Bye the way, you may want to tighten up that fan belt, it looks a little loose... |
Wow, it looks wonderful. Yes, absolutely wonderful.:)

Trouble is - and don't take this too personally - I still don't know, after all these years, whether to take you seriously or not  Cheers! Glen |
