Heat Shield

Bob,

I am taking the engine out of my car so that I can detail both the engine and the car. My question for you is what type of heat shield/tape do you recommend I install in the engine compartment? Currently the car has some old heat shielding around the footboxs but they are loosing adhesion and need to be replaced.

Ok I just went through this

Hope you have alot of $ set aside to do this

I actually went through repainting the footboxes and added all the aluminum to the engine compartment. Decided while I was at it to redo the wiring, brake fluid reservoirs, heat shields and wheel well vents.

To answer your question about the heat shielding we found the stuff you need at Lowe's in the air/heat ducting department. You may need more than 1 roll though. A nice finishing touch is to use some duct tape (thats the shinny silver stuff for attaching air ducts).

The trick with the Lowe's insulation is to hold down the vunerable edges with narrow strips of aluminum pop-riveted to the footbox.

If you want to get fancy with waffle pattern stainless steel, try S.L. Sales (714-662-7704). They've got separate insulation material and .005" stainless. Total cost around $150.

This is how it looks when we use it in our GT. We roll the edges over.

The waffle stainless is the way to go with the insulation backing. Used it on my ERAGT on the bulkhead between the engine and passenger compartments. Have now used it on the foot boxes of my ERAFIA. Much easier to keep clean. Watch out for the sharp edges... each time I've lost a little blood in the process.

What is wrong with you? Send me some of that ERA stainless heat shield, ( a sliver will do) I'll sue them.

I bet they pay up rather than go to court with some poor emmigrant. I want Peter on the stand, with a sub sandwich in his hand.

As you should know, getting a judgment is one thing... collecting another. Would you want to end up with some marginal buildings in a questionable area of downtown New Britain inhabited (with only one or two exceptions) by guys who should otherwise be institutionalized somewhere... anywhere? Cripes, this is all they have to keep them "from the streets."

How can a lawyer loose a little blood? Sowing machine oil maybe....but not blood. I don't think Morty has ever reached that deep into an engine compartment in his life. May have scratched himself waxing around the hood latch tho.

...and there was the time that I walked into the garage to work on my own car and there was a "DO NOT TOUCH" sign on the windshield. When I asked why the sign was there, the response was "That means you Holden"

No, I find that things go much better if I provide major mammal parts, a certain amount of cash and then stand well back from the accident scene, wine glass in hand, and observe the mayhem...
