Hoppy - congratulations! As someone in almost your exact situation (see my recent posting - WOW! Did my garage change...about my ERA 601 purchase), let me try to put your mind at ease a bit about the 428.

If you read some of the original history, yes, the 427 produced more HP, BUT, this was a race designed/developed motor - it developed it's HP at much higher RPM's - the general consensus was (and is) the 390/428 was much more practical motor for street use - insofar as it developed more low end torque
(= speed off the line) than the 427, which is much more usable/practical in a street car situation.

Hi banks at Daytona - go with the 427. Street car ooomph...go with the 428.
