? for anyone with an Oil Cooler
What are your normal oil and water temps? What is your normal oil pressure?
I'm going to tape off the oil cooler I have per dougs suggestion with weather under 50 degree's. Anyone else do that?

Just a thought, but you might consider taping (or blocking the air flow) from behind the oil cooler, so it looks a bit better.

Good idea...I'm not super concerned what it looks like but once I put the tape on I might change my mind!
My issue with blocking from the rear is that I'll be dealing with the front pressure of the air as I drive. Anything I put behind will want to keep going in the same direction and might be tough to hold in place.

Well, I tried it, and you're right...my cute little bit of aluminum behind the cooler blew off while going down the road, and I just never got around to making another...I plumbed in a thermostat instead. The aluminum seemed like a good idea at the time...
My normal water temp runs 185-195 F, and unfortunately the oil is just a bit lower at 180-190 F...about 30 degrees colder on the oil than I would like.

Is the water temp that you noted in centigrade? If so, your water temp isn't that far off, especially in cold weather.

Don't do anything until Spring/Summer. Your water temp is perfectly normal for the chilly temps that we have right now. But I'm suspicious that your oil temp is just not giving your a correct reading -- but I'll know for sure when I hear your Spring/Summer numbers. If during the Spring weather you can't get your oil temp above 80 then your readings are wrong (and I know of no malady, other than a bad gauge or sender, that causes below normal oil temperatures in an engine, even with your oil cooler).

From what I have learned here..........oil needs to be 212 degrees or higher to work properly, and also that oil should be hotter than the water.

Try a piece of 1/8" black rubber sheet from a hardware store. Block the front of the oil cooler and tack it on with a little black duck tape. It was recommended to me and works like a charm.
Blocking Air Flow to Oil Cooler
It also blends in so you don't even notice it.

428, it sounds like your t-stat isn't working, and I wonder if your oil temp gage is reading wrong...try a laser temp gage and check the radiator and oil pan...it may be ok but gages are reading wrong. Those temps are way too low for healthy running.

I'm using mine as an aux. radiator; looks great with the lines on it and no one is the wiser. I've got a hard time getting enough heat in the oil without the cooler just street driving.

I put a sandwich thermostat on mine also. My temps run about the same as Ken's, but my car runs much better than his!

Rick, you must be smoking those funny cigarettes again...unless you got another motor! Let's see now, what were those dyno results? I've got them around here somewhere...
Seriously, how's the car and the Houston gang? Hope you, Dorothy and the family are doing well. Have fun at San Marcos!

I just placed a piece of cardboard in front of the oil cooler. Most people don't notice it because they don't look down that far. It increased my oil temps approx 40 degrees ( 21F OAT, oil went from 150 to 190, 40F OAT, oil went from 160 to 200-210). Was about 220 the other day when it was in the 60's.

I'm going to tape the face of the cooler as Doug suggested and see what results I get. I'll post Sunday after I take it for a spin if the weather cooperates. The car runs flawlessly and is very smooth so I have to think if I had an issue that would not be the case - I could be wrong as I am far from an engine expert - just my gut feeling.

Frank, are you gauges in Celsius or Fahrenheit? My oil temp levels out at about 95 C and water is at 85 C.
95 C = 203 F
85 C = 185 F
