Brad Penn Oil and the ZDDP Debate

Recently had an amazing experience to prove the value of the original formula Kendal Racing Oil now produced by Brad Penn.

Three years ago I had put this oil in my rebuilt side oiler and pumped the oil through the engine by turning the oil pump drive with an electric drill. This was done with the anticipation that I would not be able to use the motor for a few years, so I sealed it in a crate and stored it in my garage.

Last month I decided to uncrate it, change the oil and circulate it before going any further. I bought some oil from my local auto supplier and proceded to remove the valve covers and inspect the condition of things. When I saw the incredible clean condition and this Kendal oil still sticking to all the parts, I kept the same oil in the motor and just changed the filter and pumped the oil through again.

I refused to put any of this new low quality oil in my side oiler until I could find the original stuff.

By the way we have high performance engines not racing engines. I played around at a shop this weekend where a guy had a drag boat. Camshaft had .995" lift, 950lb open pressure, solid rollers, rebuilt engine every 2 season or about 2 hours run time. Beleive it or not he used castrol 10W30 gtx between races. $11.00 at Walmart, LOL!

I was getting it off Amazon.com and you could generally find it for just under five bucks a quart and then try for the "Super Saver" free shipping. But the Oil Warehouse now ships it to me for that price as well, so I think I will give them a try. I think that's the price to beat right now, five bucks a quart delivered to your door.

FYI - to our location, Oil Warehouse charges $39 + $21 shipping () or $60 delivered a case - they are definitely playing games with pricing and shipping. You can buy from a fellow Club Cobra member (Fred - "FWB") for $48 + $11 shipping or $59 delivered. So you get to support another club member for the same price.

Anyway, thought I'd throw that out there.

Just to play Devil's advocate -

Why not just go to Walmart and get your favorite viscosity of Mobil1 (or whatever) for $4.50 per quart and add to it the ZDDP additive from Redline or whomever for $12.00?

Mobil 1 at walmart is $24.00 for 5 quarts, throw in bottle of ZDDP for $10.00 plus $5.00 shipping, plus the tax on original $24.00 ($1.75) and we are at $8.00 per quart. I can get Brad Penn deliverd to my house after tax title and License for $5.05 per quart 1500 PPM zinc and phosphorous and is semi synthetic. Mobil 1 does not come in 15W40. So to answer you question I save 8*3 = $24 per oil change with the brad penn and have all the additives.

That sure as hell beats Joe Gibbs racing oil, which I am running now. almost $15 / quart!! I almost had a heart attack when they rang up the bill for a case.

Its hard to imagine Cobra owners concerned with the minor cost variables of oil relative to the bigger picture of owning a Cobra. Personally, I like to use Mobil 1 or Royal Purple and then add my own ZDDP. Who the hell is Brad Pen, and who makes the oil he has his label on. Manufacturing quality motor oil is no easy task. I only trust my car to big name proven oil manufacturers. Thats why I like getting my own ZDDP and adding it to good proven oil. Who cares about some extra $$$$$$$$$$$ I want PROVEN premium oil and I will add the ZDDP.

brad penn is the refinery that used to process and package the complete kendall line, the kendall name was sold off to conoco-phillips. the old kendall GT-1 is the formula now being marketed as Brad Penn high performance oil. in the 1970's and 1980's if you asked around the dragstrips you would have found that there was a large number of racers that would only use the GT-1 in their engines. and for good reason......

i looked at the description and the thumbnail on the oil warehouse's site of the brad penn. it may not have been updated, maybe someone who has just recently bought from them can chime in.

if the quarts say racing oil on them, this is oil that is at least a year old. the label was changed to say high performance oil. so any oil bought that says racing oil on it is old stock some dealer got rid of, or old oil they have been sitting on.
