467 She
I have a 427 all aluminum engine from Shelby Engines punched to 467. the longblock was built by them and I installed the intake and Shelby aluminum rocker assemblies and set the valve lash by using the instructions from the lifter company ... snug until you feel tension between the pushrod and lifter then 1/2 turn more and tighten the lock nut. I've adjusted these now 3 times with not much difference noticed...
NOW... here's my problem that I need help on: The motor only runs for a few seconds and runs extremely rough... like only 4 or 5 cylinders are firing and I have NO throttle response... it just seems to run and then eventually blows smoke and junk up the carb and shuts off. I am not a newbie... I've built several motors but i just can't figure this one out... everything is brand new, engine, carb, distributor, coil, wires, gas etc....
I've gone over the distributor to make sure it's not 180 out.
I've checked and rechecked the firing order and wires 15426378 passenger side is 1-4 and drivers side cylinders are 5-8
I've checked spark going to all the wires...
I have fuel squirting from the jets whenever I want it.
I've pasted a video up of what I'm seeing.

I'd appreciate any help to start chasing this down.

Just looking at the top of the distributor, are you sure you don't have the wires in the right order, but backward? The firing order is counter clockwise. If they are stacked correctly, then try giving the distributor a twist. It definately sounds like a timing issue.

Are you sure that firing order is correct for the cam that you have ? I seem to remember that 15426378 firing order is from the 260/289 engine, and that Ford changed it on later small block engines (302 or 351 ?) so that cylinders 7 and 8 were not firing one after another, to reduce local head temps. My memory is fuzzy, but check firing order. Good luck

Your cylinder numbering system seems incorrect.

Give it some more gas and check timing.

What kind of camshaft and lifters do you have? What is the timing set on and have you checked it?
Thanks, Keith Craft

valves sound like they are not closing. how snug did you get the pushrods. you don't want to collapse the plungers, just run the adjusting nuts down with your fingers til you feel them start to compress the plungers, then 1/2 turn.

Hate to ask this, but
You are adjusting the lash when the lifters are on the base circle of the cam and the valves are closed, right?

I didn't read what type of lifters you have, but your method is for hydraulic and not solid. And, like Dimis metioned, you need to give your engine way more gas from a chokeless carb. Also, if your lifters are hydraulic, it's a 1/2 turn and no more. If your engine has run before, and you feel the need to have to adjust the lifters more and more, you could have wiped cam lobes. Just throwing out some ideas.

Got her running last night
Just needed more advance and a lot more gas and she roared to life rough at first but after all the lifters pumped up it smoothed out and runs strong.
Thanks to everyone for all the tips!!!

I don't believe you. Haha
You'll have to provide video evidence to satisfy me.
Great to hear you got her pumping on all 8
Enjoy
