Is your 30% figure based on an exact wheel match-meaning Hali Cobra 7 1/2 / 9 1/2 wheels like Phil's, Lynn's and originals? Or 30% lighter than the same size steel wheel?

I'm always "running at the adhesion break point." Literally and figuratively.

RodKnock, you're smarter than that, they're just talking about the elements of aluminum and magnesium, not the wheels.:p The density of aluminum is 2.7kg/m3 and magnesium is 1.74 -- that's 36% They are not saying their wheels weigh a third less. Now c'mon, you knew that....

I've got unmounted Trigos and Halibrand mags.
I'll put them on my bathroom scale tonight.

I think I missed those two elements on my Chemistry test when we studied the chapter on the Periodic Table of the Elements.

Al vs Mag

Aluminum (6061 alloy) weighs 2720 kilograms/cubic meter and Magnesium weighs 1738 kilograms/cubic meter or 36.1% lighter than Aluminum. That percentage could vary depending on what alloy and how much of it is needed to cast the two materials. It is also possible that the cross section of one of the wheel materials may need to change to achieve the same strength and therefore also affect the weight difference. I think that if the Magnesium wheels were always available, regardless of any weight advantage, you would see a lot more of them because they are just another one of the cool and unique features of these cars.

Here's a fast shot I took of the back wheel after putting it back on, again, this morning after the weighing process. Now you gotta admit, for a weekend's worth of work...

Bill

An excellent point. Both companies may use different structure in the webs, hubs and rims also.

Uhhh, why don't you just knock off early today and trot on home to weigh those wheels? No stopping at your favorite watering-hole, either.

rodneym 04-22-2013 10:33 PM

Well, I did what I said I'd do.
The problem is that my scale wouldn't weigh anything that light (it's a digital scale).
Sorry.

patrickt 04-23-2013 04:24 AM

OK, this is a toughie...

1) Weigh yourself.
2) Weigh yourself while holding a wheel.
3) Subtract the two weights.

You don't have to tell us how much you weigh, just the wheels.:p

rodneym 04-23-2013 12:00 PM

I don't want to know how much I weigh!!!

May I suggest an Ironman Scale? It will not only tell you the weight of your wheels, but also tell you your body fat %. ;)

patrickt 04-23-2013 12:35 PM

Well are we going to get the dang weights of the wheels or not? Lemmee tell you, one way to get in shape is take those suckers on and off your car a couple of times and lug them around for one reason or another.

Only if you repeated it everyday for the rest of your life. :)

Yes, I want to know the difference in weight between the aluminum and magnesium wheels as well.
