The epoxy can take the vibration better and oil filled coils don't do as well when they are mounted horizontally.

An oil fill coil has an air bubble in them. Laying them on their side exposes the wire coil and "could" cause them the burn up. I would say 70% or better burn up if laid on their side. I think the size of the air bubble is the problem.
