Thanks for the info. Another question: I have been considering the 406 that Southern Automotive sells and have spoken to Bill Parham- truly a great guy. Does anyone have the Southern Automotive 406 ? If so, I was wondering if you could share your insight on power, streetabiliity and idle characteristics.

Thanks.
Mike

When I first started looking for an F E, I had a hard time finding a suitable 428 to rebuild. I did run across a 390 standard bore engine and ended up using that block, crank, rods, flyheel and balancer.

The money that I saved by not springing for a 428 was used to buy upgrades. The engine is finished and mounted in the frame and has had the cam run in---- about 45 minutes fun time so far and it sounds like a monster.

I used the Edelbrock aluminum RPM heads and intake and water pump. Holley 750 vacuum advance, Crane custom grind solid 238/248@ 110 LC cam and the Dove/Comp Cam roller rocker set up with Crane lightweight "shell" lifters.

The engine sounds pretty tuff. I have no problem with the bragging rights issue. This motor looks right, sounds right and will make plenty of power .

Mike

I have one of SA's 406 engines and it is great! They've made it visually indistinguishable from a 427, has all of the benefits of a big block (sound, torque, etc.), and is obviously a cheaper route to go. I consider it the perfect replica engine for a replica cobra!

Pete c .
Be sure you find the post that talked about the differences , some have better brass bushings or something , one of our guys here went with the shelby set up , but the holes in his heads (edelbrock aluminum ) need to bo drilled out from 3/8 to 7 / 16 or somthing to allow for the different angle of the push rods . But Go for it . Solid lift does not give .
