Default Best intake for 427 S/O

What is the best intake manifold for 427 S/O with medium risers edelbrock aluminum heads? I just want one single 4bbl.

I am partial to the original Ford Sidewinder manifold that I installed on my Kirkham. They are not cheap, but clean examples are around.

The Sidewinder is very efficient as the slightly offset plenum affords equal intake runners. By the way, do not let anyone tell you that this offset will create an hood cutout clearance problem with your Kirkham - it does not.

In an original spec chassis like the KMP, the engine offset counters the carb offset. Use it with confidence - it's a great piece.

82ACAUTOCRAFT You didnot say what cam, compression, style of driving you are looking to do? Are you looking for orginial or the most power from the motor or a broad power band for all around fun. Single plane, dualplane, sidewinder, torker, You want to match the cam, heads and manifold all for the same power band. Hope this helps. Rick Lake

MY car came with a Dove tunnel wedge 2x4s. The height and 2x4s makes air cleaners a restriction, espcially with out a big scoop.If I were doing it all from scratch. I may not have chosen an FE.I wouldn't have chossen a 2x4.If carbruated it would have been an intake that would have accepted a 4500 series Holley or Demon. Lastly if I didn't have any induction to start with,I would have just chosen a multi port fuel injection system.Either a converted single four intake with a large airdoor or a Weber look-a-like fuel injection conversion.
A trueism of HotRodding is the wilder you go in any area, the more other parsts need to be modified to get the improved effect. A big carb needs a better cam ,valves ,exhaust ,air cleaner, etc.

We are looking for around 500 ponies, 10.5 compression, the cam is solid crower, I don't know specs, Bottom end is 1968 427, steel Ford crank, crower rods, JE pistons. Edelbrock 427 heads, medium rider, I use to have the dual carb setup, no good, very hard to tune, no point in running that.

Mine is a 427so with 428 crank,edelbrock heads,solid roller with 645 lift ,248 duration `at .50.It has a victor single plane with a BIGS 850cfm carb and it runs like crazy.Low end torque may be a little less but after 3000 rpm look out. chuck

82ACAUTOCRAFT For your car I would look at A Blue thunder single plane or a Dove single plane with a 850-900 cfm carb. Match port the intake to the heads. Power band is about 3000- 7500 rpm. I have Fuel injection with a 452 motorFE I have a 6000 rpm chip in my MSD to save motor. It is out of power at 5500 rpm NO point in twisting it for no reason. Is your cobra alum body? There is a carb formula for the right CFMs for a motor. If you have a large fuel line 1/2 inch and good pump A DP 780 would do fine. Do the formula and add 10% that will be all the carb you need. Rick Lake ps Bigger is not always better, That's what my other half saids.

Concerning a single four intake, you have multiple choices, all of which should be able to support 500hp except for maybe the eldebrock performer (not the rpm), which has small ports.


Dual PLane

Edelbrock Performer RPM - larger ports than the Performer only version, but maybe still not as large as Sidewinder or Blue thunder. Most reasonably priced. May not make as much top end hp as sidewinder or bluethunder.

Sidewinder - good large ports, factory ford part, about $350-500 used. Came with just casting numbers on it (full plenum divider), some say SHELBY (notched plenum divider), and I've seen a couple say COBRA. With the carb and turkey pan, you can't see the script anyways. The carb sits offset to the driver's side.

Cobra jet - Dual plane , cast iron or aluminum, good large ports, but heavy if use cast iron. Carb sits in the center of intake.

Blue Thunder - ?improved version of cobra jet intake, reasonable price, excellent performance for a dual plane, what most people use for a period correct piece. Probably the best performing dual plane, with the sidewinder a close second.



Single PLane

Dove - extremely large ports, some say too big for both top end as well as low end.

Edelbrock Victor - smaller ports than dove, may make more hp at low end as well as top end. Probably the best single plane now.

Offenhauser Port-O-Sonic - until the victor came along, many people used this for racing, as it has smaller ports than the Dove.


I can't think of any others.




You would be best to talk to a ford specialty shop, like Rob at Blue Oval Performance (reasonable prices), or southern automotive, who both have possibly used all of these intakes and may have tested them on the dyno.

I selected a 4 bbl dual port intake manifold from blue thunder which will be matched port to the heads. I just received the manifold, AWSOME!!!!!! great quality, the finish is great, the ports are huge!

82AC- I have tried everyone of the intakes David D. describes above and the one you have chosen is as good as they get with a dual plane. I have a B.T. for a Dominator that has been substantially ported and flowed, if you are interested. It is port matched to the E-brock heads. Check your clearances around the pushrod holes (you will most likely have to take a file to them) and the B.T. is slightly taller. I machined mine off .750 and used phenolic spacers when I wanted to make all out power, or on the track. I still have the tricked out Dominator for it also. Test fit it a couple of times and save yourself some grief. If you need help, let me know.
