Transmissions
Can anyone suggest a good transmission to mate with a 427 that will be able to handle applications over 500hp? I've got a 4 speed toploader now but have been thinking about a 5 or 6 speed.

Tremec TKO ll five speed or T56 six speed. The 2nd overdrive in the six speed is redundant unless you have a low rear end gear.

Thanks Thor. Are the Tremecs as tough built as the 4 speed toploader?

No, they are not as strong, however, you will have a hard time breaking one unless you drag race with slicks, or have a true track car.

Cool Thanks guys. So for normal (or terrifying) street use then a Tremec should hold fine. Thanks for the help.

424:
You might want to take a look at the rear end ratio as it will apply to the Tremec and make sure that the relatively low 1st gear ratio will work for you and whatever tires you're running.
There are a number of gear ratio calculators that will give you the numbers.

STOUT TREMEC.....
427 CRAZE, you may want to look at X2C MOTORSPORTS.COM they have a tremec that can handle 1,100 HP in mustang with slicks for a reasonable price. Sound pretty much bullet-proof!

DonC,
Im going to be running steet tires, some Y or Z rated 17's in front and 18's in the rear. How do you think this will work with the 5 or 6 speed? The setup is for street driving, no actual track use.

427:
Even got the numbers right this time (stupid keyboard).
I’ve included a couple of links to both a gear ratio calculator and a tire diameter calculator that I’ve found to be of help. First use the tire diameter calculator to give you a diameter of the tires you’re running then use the gear ratio calculator by plugging in the ratios of whatever transmission you’re contemplating. Finally add the rear end ratio you’re considering. With these numbers you can look at mph vs rpm and get some idea of what you’ll get with any given setup. Fun to play with for THEORETICAL numbers that allow you to use any combination of factors. Remember, your results may vary.
I’ve spent some time with them to make the final decision of my transmission/rear end ratio that I think will work well for me. It won’t be ideal but will get me in the ballpark for what I want as an end result.
Hope they help,
DonC

Some dealers don't even know what the "II" means at the end of the model number.
I bought mine from a CC advertiser; Forte's Parts Co.. Mike knows his stuff, the service is very personal and he's got 'em in stock.
You might beat his price by a couple bucks, but you get what you pay for.
