Post 406 or 427...whats it worth??

Does anybody out there have any knowledge of the
differences between a 406 and 427? I found a 1963 427,
but the owner says it is from a 406 sand casting. (never been bored) Its a complete short block with a 428 crank (never been turned), minus the cam. The The engine is just sitting in his garage, and needs to be freshened up for sure. Hes asking $3000. He says he will throw in a set of low/riser heads for free.

The crank turns just fine, but I'am a bit concerned because its
not running. Is this thing worth the money?

Any help regarding this issue is appreciated

Greg

GDP: Casting numbers and cast dates are all we can go by. If this is a one off, eccentric piece with no known application, you are better off buying a similar unit from some of our friends here on the forum.

Get the numbers and digits, then letīs talk.

Snakecharmer (aka Stretch Williams in Austin, TX) was selling a really nice complete 427FE SO at a pretty good price recently. He may have already sold it or taken it off the market, but it's certainly worth dropping him a line.

Just saw the 427 I mentioned above is still available. My brother was going to buy it, for a car he was going to build, but decided to go with a completed car with one already installed.

I picked up a complete 63 406 with a tripower setup for $1500. The 406 had a short life from 62 1/2 till 63 1/2 when it was replaced with the 427. The 406 came with a 4.13 bore the same as a 428. If anything this might be a early 427 your looking at as the 427 was a new casting for 63. Best way to ID this is to measure the bore (4.23 for 427) and get the casting numbers and date code. Some say the early 427's used the 406 block casting but I don't know about this. The 406 is a rare piece as there were not many made because of it's short life. I think production numbers were under 5000 for 406 cars with some service blocks to follow and that is it! So as advised post some numbers and we can help you sort it out. G.

Hey all,

Thanks for all of your input. I have been visiting this website for the last year and a half and this is the first time I actually inquired. This online posting thing is rather new to me.

The guy I spoke to did mention a 4.23 bore. I am going to have a look at it Friday afternoon. I will definetly get the numbers and post them before I make any decision.

I am also taking Mr. 427's advice and looking on the website.

Thanks again,
