Hey Buzz, I totally agree. I'm surprised a P51 theme on a KMP has not been done for a show car. It would be a brave project with a questionable resale value. I would enjoy seeing more out of the box modifications. I think we are entering a new ara of cobra builds. With the coyote & LS engines, new technologies and manufactures willing to push the envelope to make these iconic cars safer, this hobby will continue to grow and explode afer the recession is over. IMHO... Darren

I second that! The fabrication aspect would be incredible. One problem. The Kirkham family is too nice. Not enuf drama for cable. Although, the Tea-Party movement with David charging across America in a polished cobra would make a great sidebar story. Make the call.;)

We have thought off and on over the years about making a P-51. That is a massive undertaking. We had a customer many years ago make a car very close to what you have described. It was phenomenal.

I love it when guys are willing to push the envelope. Thanks to Larry Ellison we were able to do just that on the billet chassis car.

There isn't too much drama around here. We just like to make stuff.

Darren's car is pretty cool with the exposed rivets around the Flip-Top opening. I'll post pictures (and hopefully a video) tomorrow. We just delivered two cars yesterday so I didn't have too much time to make videos. Tomorrow will be fun.

David, can you show some of the detail of the cowl area and how the tilt front will align with the rest of the body?

And also how it is fastened down.

Thanks!
John

Hey David, the flip-top is moving right along. I talked to Keith and the engine will be finished soon the hilbourn injection will be shipped this week.
The rivets will give a unique look. Will they be less visual after you file, sand and polish?
Any thoughts on the power steering pump mounted on the cammer? Darren

dallas_ 02-13-2011 05:36 AM

I like how you matched up the tilt and the cowl. Thanks for showing the detail.
Really impressive work.

I've just reached a minor epiphany of sorts. Though I've always "gotten" the presumed link between Cobras and P51s, I could never put my finger on it until just this minute. And it's so simple I can't believe that it never popped into my mind but the Cobra is a sexy Anglo body with a big American engine and the P51 is a sexy American body with a big Anglo engine. Ding! And the light comes on. LOL So all you guys who've had this at the forefront of your minds all along, give me a break. I'm not that smart. :JEKYLHYDE

Steve

Don't get me started on Cobras an Harleys though!

David - absolutely beautiful. Everyone should have a water jet!! Why a 3/8" gap? Isn't that kind of wide?

1985 CCX 02-13-2011 08:26 AM

That is awsome.
Great job and very inspirational.................

Phenomenal in-house talent!!

David,

If you work with your hands you are a laborer.
If you work with your hands and mind you are a craftsman.
If you work with your hands, mind, heart and soul you are an artist!
From Poland to Provo, the Kirkham team are true artists!! Peace, Darren

We had a few challenges figuring out how we were going to finish off the edge and gap. We have them handled now. We also delivered 3 cars last week so it was a busy week. This week we are getting ready for our Annual Open House. It's going to be fun.

Can't wait to see how the engine works out for you. The injection will really look great.

The "rivets" are actually stainless bolts. They will be polished up along with the body. I think they will really look nice when we are finished.

As for the power steering pump...I think we are just going to have to wait and see.

Thanks for the kind words. As I said, getting the gap right was a real challenge.
