getting back to my initial question of why are "gun deaths" more tragic than deaths by any other instrument? suicide death rates, and homicide rates are statistically insignificant from other "first world countries", so why blame the gun?
There is some truth in what you say Joe. Gun deaths are no more tragic than any other death. However:

* You ARE more likely to die in the USA than any other country. In fact gun deaths alone in the US are 2 times the total rates of homicide in any other 1st world country.

* If you take out gun homicide in the US, then the death per other means is quite similar to 2nd on the list - Finland. But overall, the homicide rates in the US including gun homicide is around 2.5 times that of Finland.

I was in Data analysis for about 18 years so like the number crunching, and can tell you these figures are anything but "statistically insignificant"

It's all relative - Australia has a much smaller population than the USA, therefore a smaller economy and less capability to take massive numbers of immigrants. In round numbers, the U.S. has average 1 million legal immigrants from 2010-2013, while Australia had 213,000 immigrants in fiscal 2013-2014. IOW, the U.S. allowed in roughly 5x the numbers allowed in by Australia. Bravo.

OTOH, the U.S. had a population of 316 million in 2013, while Australia's estimated population in 2015 is 24 million. The U.S. is therefore 13x larger than Australia - so on a per capita basis Australia is allowing in WAY more immigrants than the U.S. Even if you add in the current estimated illegal immigrants of roughly 300,000 per year, Australia is still taking in more than the U.S., again on a per capita basis.

Don't wrench a shoulder patting yourself on the back.

BTW, recent data indicates more Mexicans have been leaving than arriving.
