Fred, I almost had to sue my dentist a few years ago to get him to pull a really bad tooth. He just doesn't believe in pulling them at all. I finally told him that if he didn't pull it I would go to someone who would as it was just a mess. Then after agreeing that it probably couldn't be saved, it took him nearly 45 minutes to get it out. He was sweating and doing everything but standing on my chest trying to pull that thing out. After it was finally out, in two pieces, he said that was the hardest tooth he had ever pulled. I swear it felt as if the roots of that tooth went clear to my toes as I could feel the pulling all the way down there. :D Ron %/ |

Tru, what rifle are you using. Is that the first deer he has shot at? I remember the first one I shot at. It was walking towards me and it stopped about 40 yards away. I took my shot and it started running and made it about 30 yards. I unloaded the gun (four more rounds) in the 30 yards it ran and didn't hit it other than the first shot. Boy did I feel embarrased at not hitting it any other time, but I was suprprised because I thought I hadn't hit it. It was a decent six pointer. The rack is still at my parents house. My favorite rifle for deer is a Remington 760 Carbine pump in 30-06. Normally with a 5 round magazine and two 8 shot magazines in reserve in case I see a coyote. |

Thanks Brent. I don't need my teeth anymore set than they are. :LOL: I used to use a 30-30 carbine to deer hunt as it was so brushy you couldn't see very far and the 30-30 was light and short enough to be easy to use in those conditions. Now I would prefer a 30-06 with a scope as you may be shooting across a canyon. Then once you shoot, you have to make the 6 mile trek to the bottom of the canyon and up the other side to see if you hit the deer if he didn't just drop. Ron |
The first year I went I took a 30-30 and I was the one forced through all the brush. Didn't see a thing though. Then I started carryiing the 06 and it had a flip down scope and was a carbine, so who do you suppose got to go through all the brush still? What's funny though, is opening morning I always sat in a valley where they crossed and my longest shot at a deer was maybe 60 yards even though I could see several hundred yards each way. Coyote I have shot out to 400 yards on the run with that gun.

That is good shooting. Up here I always carry my 9 MM when I am out hiking because of wild pigs and bears. A lot of good it would do against a mad bear, but it is much easier when hiking up and down these canyon walls to carry than a rifle. And we do have some huge bears around here. The only rifle I have now is a 22 Magnum with a scope. I was looking at some when I went over to pay my dues at the range yesterday, but think I would rather get a smaller hand gun to carry as mine is uncomfortable when in The Cobra or any bucket seat car. I think you would have to lay down and wait until the bear is over you and shoot up through the gap in the bottom jaw into it's brain. :)
Otherwise, the noise and stinging might discourage it. We were out Sunday and I shot a few others handguns. A Ruger P-Series in .45ACP and a H&K USP in .45ACP and a Glock in .40S&W. All of them were thicker than I would like for CCW. Especailly the USP. I'll stick with getting my 1911. |
The good thing we have going is the steep canyon walls. Bears can't run at all well down hill. I have watched two or three start down one of these steep walls and try to turn and they just fall and roll until they hit something. So if we see one, we make sure to try and be on the low side. But for the most part, if you just stand still they will go right on by.

I have only seen one black bear, and that was on a fishing trip to Canada. Out on a lake where the only access is by float plane. We stayed in a cabin of sorts and he was between the cabin and the outhouse.

30 06 Mauser custom 1909 fabicated in Berlin receiver. I made my last rifle this year, I am not going to make any more. It just costs too much and you can buy a very nice bull barrel Remington for $800.
I like the Mauser action, the quility of the Argentino 1909s made in Berlin are simpley the best. If I was goign to do another, I would pick the Montana Riflemens Action. It is a combination of the Mauser and the Winchester M70 in one action, very nice but expensive. :D |

Darn Tru, Just when I was going to ask you to build me a hand gun that can be concealed in your hand, fires a 45 caliber slug, has virtually no recoil, and is accurate up to 100 yards. The perfect piece to carry in the Cobra. Ron :LOL: |

Pepper laminated stocks on two, synth on one and, well wood for the first one. The 30 06 has a fluted barrel, the 300 Win Mag has Shillen Stainless and the last one has a rolled and tappered steel barrel. They all are floating. :D |

Ah, what better way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ought-six. Sounds like you have some nice shooters there.
Dad has one varmint gun in 6mm with a custom stock and Mauser action. Rolled and tapered barrel. Nice flat shooting gun. Very little kick too with the little 6mm and a heavy stock and barrel. For deer I still like the lighter 760 Carbine. It is pump action so the forestock has no effect with weather changes. Of course I was only shooting under 100 yards most of the time, so a tack driver like yours would be overkill. |
